I work in mountainous areas often however I'm not actually doing any climbing. Would the mid-weight or heavy weight softshell gloves suffice ? Approx altitude is between 12000 to 15000 ft

Is the waterproofing all the way up or only till the laces ? How long does this waterproofing last ?

It's sealed even at the laces, it's waterproof but just don't put your foot in the water for too long or else it'll start seeping in

What would you recommend for -0F weather? Grip and dexterity is a necessity for me and I haven't found anything that would be idea yet.

I've tried a few options for sub-zero but everything I've found has been petty bulky at that point limiting dexterity. BD's Guide Gloves are rated down to -20F and while I can't even slightly tie a shoelace with them, I can still belay, manage a pack, shovel, etc. Pairs well with a light liner glove for a few moments of adjustment before they go back on.

Great review video, thanks! I realize you posted this a long time ago but if you can still answer... How is the fit of these gloves? For example I usually wear size Large gloves but with some gloves size Medium is a bit better.

Sorry about the delay. If you're still curious, I'd say they run just a bit big. I wear an L to XL and the L here fits me fine.

Are the shoes unbearably hot in summer hiking? Have you had a chance to use it in hiking conditions where you are on your feet for 10 hours a day or are they just for walking a few blocks in the city?

These are an older model at this point and I’ve been through a few pairs with many long hikes / days out. All things said, they breath quite well for a waterproof shoe, which is to say they don’t let in air like my non outdry version but I’ve never felt overheated and I run rather hot.

I've hiked many miles in these shoes without getting overly hot feet (obviously it's not as cool as something vented or mesh.) Considering that I'm basically always hot, I call it a win for a waterproof shoe but there are more breathable options out there.

I wore my new pair (synthetic version) today for ~4km hike. Outside temp 35-40 C. I felt a bit of heat and wanted to take off my shoes at the top of the mountain. Very different from my old running shoes, which is super light and breathable. Fantastic traction and support on loose rocks and sand, but I didn’t like it on concrete steps.

I ended buying a pair and very happy with them. Super comfortable, truly waterproof and not unbearable hot in most conditions I hike in (maximum 30 C). At 35-40 C, I would be burning up all over the place, never mind my feet (you must be in fantastic shape)...

@travelerted4037

I'm not entirely sure I follow your question but Columbia makes a variety of shoe options from regular to waterproof exteriors but also water-specific shoes. The drainmaker for example is designed specifically be submerged in water, let it out and dry out effectively. I have a similar model from them and it's great for white water rafting trips where I want protection but also complete water use.

around 3:44 you're commenting about how the water is beading off as being how "outdry works". I don't think that's correct. The beading, is due to a really good DWR coating on the outside. The outdry process video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGe1coqQZcqNe9E) shows that it's actually a liner on the inside, behind the outer/upper. Outdry's big improvement over "the big name" is that it's not a bag that is sewn into place (like wearing a plastic big between your sock and the shoe); the big bag allows the shoe to absorb water.

My mistake, appreciate the comment and the link. I've been meaning to do a "in the real world" video review of these for a while but will have to dig into the construction details more first clearly.

Please, make video with a lot of puddles, mud and so on. Walk and stand it water for a long time - to proof that your Columbia really 100% waterproof! And at the end of the vid take them off and show your dry socks. It would be really intresting test! Can your Columbia withstands all that?
