You'll take my life, but I'll take yours too You'll fire your musket, but I'll run you through So when you're waiting for the next attack You'd better stand, there's no turning back The bugle sounds, the charge begins But on this battlefield, no one wins The smell of acrid smoke and horses' breath As I plunge on into certain death The horse, he sweats with fear, we break to run The mighty roar of the Russian guns And as we race towards the human wall The screams of pain as my comrades fall We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground And the Russians fire another round We get so near, yet so far away We won't live to fight another day We get so close, near enough to fight When a Russian gets me in his sights He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow A burst of rounds take my horse below And as I lay there gazing at the sky My body's numb and my throat is dry And as I lay forgotten and alone Without a tear, I draw my parting groan The Trooper Iron Maiden

I think the Napolionic era was a bit of an exception primarily due to Wellington at least understanding logistical considerations such as the need to feed the army. I agree that there will always be good people bubble to the top one way or another, but in a system of privilege, it is generally who you know, not what you know that dominates, as the saying goes.

More like, typical arrogance and incompetence of the ruling class of the time. Not a lot has changed with the Conservative government and the public school boys with their sense of entitlement to run the country.
@DelogrosКүн бұрын
Yes and no, the advantage of the (or a) ruling class is they tend to be trained for various random crap from birth and as a result can be either very good or at least compentant due to training that they under go at their own expense if not natural ability while a commoner has to have the natural ability and have that ability seen and encouraged much later in life which is far more difficult to do. My point is I suppose back i nthis time period in particular the class system for the military made some level of sense even if it wasn't particularly fantastic and this was the worst it got in terms of corruption in the purchasing system, it actually worked pretty well in the Napolionic wars and ha done for a couple of hundred years at least, British Empire and the size of it suggests it wasn't all bad anyways.

If you want to watch one of the greatest cavalry charge I recommend a movie by Andrzej Wajda - POPIOŁY (ashes) battle of Somossiera with polish ulans.

"Uniform" of Russian artillerists shown in the film is even more frightening than the Charge itself. They look like an inhabitants of the bedlam or leprosorium. Real russian canoneer's uniform was quite different.

Selling the lack of skills as bravery. Must have a good publisher
@DelogrosКүн бұрын
The two aren't mutually exclusive, besides the lack of skills only belongs to a few officers, the men themselves where fairly obviously brave like the vast majority of soldiers in history.

When a century and many wars later, an Italian cavalry unit charged* Russian guns, the unofficial warcy was "Let's show the Brits _how it's done!"_ (*: As in, _successfully_ charged)

It has been posited that a personal dislike of the general for the leader of the cavalry was the reason for the order, to make sure Cardigan, the leader of the brigade, would die or at least be demoted. Others say it was a misreading of the order. Again others thought it was mere lunacy caused by the unmitigated confidence of the upperclass in the superiority of the English race.

So ironic - Nolan who brought the orders, realised that they were going the wrong way - then killed by the very first shot as he tried to change the direction.

Where does Lord Lucan go between 1:37 and 12:14? He wasn't involved in the charge. Did he just go over to side and watch? These Lucans have a tendency to go missing at important times.
