At 4:00 he ask him what you think salsa will be in 2024. Well, I am commenting now 2024. He still gives amazing classes here in London in soho salsa and other places. He just looks a little bit thicker than in this vedio.

Salsa has evolved tremendously over the years, even in New York City, where I learned to dance --not "salsa" because we didn't call it that back then, but son, mambo, cha cha cha, pachanga, guajira, guaracha, etc.. I learned to dance back in the 1980's with Eddie, when only a small circle of people knew who he was. Of course, back then, the real place where one learned to dance salsa was in the clubs, and on the dance floor. Eddie would get us started with the basics, the shines and a few turn patterns, and then send us off to the Corso, the Copacabana, the Latin Quarter, SOBs, the Maganet, etc., where we could really feel the passion and the heat and literally get into "the zone" dancing with many different partners, in front of the best orchestras: Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Edie Palmieri, Johnny Pacheco, Manny Oquendo, and so many others (I remember one night dancing just a few feet away from Celia Cruz in SOBs --she was with Pacheco's orchestra). The idea was to create our own style, different for each of us (but with the same basic timing of the clave and the tumbao), to learn to express our own unique selves through salsa. Of course, those days are long gone (or almost gone) in NYC, where now the salsa scene is mainly defined by the so-called socials, in dance studios, with DJs, not live music. Naturally, most of those great musicians are no longer with us; and yet there are still some great bands out there (Jimmy Bosch! Los Hacheros; Avenida B, etc.), but they now mostly have to travel outside NYC to get work. Another big change from the good old days is the dance itself. Back then, if you wanted to know who the really good dancers were, you would look at the dancers' feet, and at his or her body movement. Never, ever, at the arms or the turn patterns (which come from West Coast Swing, not Cuba). Of course, now there are so many salsa schools out there, and what is their bread and butter? You guessed it, turn patterns. Just ask Mario, who is obviously an excellent dancer and teacher. Bachata has been around for a very long time, certainly longer than what is now called "salsa". It's from the República Dominicana (RD), and I love the Dominican way of dancing bachata auténtica (including bachata guajira). But again, the modern, commercial world has completely deformed bachata, probably in Europe, where it has become known as "bachata sensual" --having absolutely nothing to do with the original bachata danced in the RD. Bachata "sensual" is a dance that's very easy to learn: it's danced on one just for starters; and you don't really even have to go to a dance school to learn how to dance bachata "sensual". As Mario says, bachata is now extremely commercial, with photogenic singers, and a good press. And it's a money maker for many clubs and studios. For those who want to use dance as a medium to meet others and to perhaps hook up with someone, and who really do not have that passion for dance that's needed to decide to invest the time (i.e. years) and money to learn and become good, and who only want a quick fix to get out on the dance floor, then bachata is probably the way to go. And I can respect that, I guess. As a salsa dancer, though, I just do not want to hear or see bachata played or danced on the same dance floor, or at the same club or social, along with salsa. The bachateros can find their own dance floor, club or social, and that's fine with me. No problem. But salsa and bachata should not be mixed on the same night at the same venue, in my opinion. And that's probably Mario's opinion as well. As a social dancer, a night dancing salsa at a club or social is a process, a voyage or trip, of ever increasing passion, up to the point of reaching a climax, a moment of maximum emotion, of elation, of being in the zone, so to speak. But if the DJ suddenly plays a bachata, the effect is that of throwing a bucket of ice water on the salsa dancer (se enfría el baile), who then has to start the process all over again, and will probably never reach that emotional high which is the "meta" we all have as social salsa dancers and lovers.

Wonderfull memories of the Salsa scene in The Netherlands during the 90's. Funny to recognize the people in the video when they were a lot younger haha. There you have Lesley Lopez playing the bass and Liber Torriente in the instructional band. I see Claudio dancing with his girlfriend Denise Muller. They atracted a lot off atention at that time at the Salsa parties. I visited sometimes a dance club at the Doctor Curtiusstraat in Amsterdam were Claudio had his dance parties. Claudio had a dance school in Utrecht. I followed some lessons there. There was also funny guy (I don't remember his name) from Suriname who helped Claudio with the dance classes all the time.
