Haven't tried but because it is alkaline it should improve the conditions for worms esp if your worm farm is a bit acidic. Don't add too much though - just a small handful/sprinkle every few weeks.

Eight years after handover of our house we experienced a mouse invasion. I found the flaps in these plastic draught excluders had all sagged, leaving a gap of about 10mm in the centre. The mice found the gap a convenient point of entry. I put a cage on top of each fan outlet and I am now looking for a metal version of the draught excluder.

Will builders plastic work to seperate soil and scoria?
@GIYGreenItYourself5 ай бұрын
No ... you need something that will wick up (or absorb and draw-up) the water from underneath the soil. I find the geotextile the best as it will last a long time. You could use another type of fabric but it might degrade quickly meaning you'll have soil all through the substrate/scoria layer and that would mean clearing it all out.

I've been using bin bags, to to shape, and Frog Tape (the best painter's tape) for years. I also found cardboard is even easier. I cut to just slightly larger than the four vents, leaving most of the outer vent fame exposed and hold it in place with the same Frog Tape. I've tried literally every brand of painter's tape I can find in every shop that sells it (there's only about ten types), but I found Frog Tape to be the best. It stays in place for months, without doing any damage. My reason to cover the vents is not to keep heat in. I do it because I have a-hole neighbours who have smoke illegally billowing from their chimneys. Covering the vents works helps, but smoke gets in through exhaust fans, toilet room vents and even from around sliding windows, so I use painter's tape all over the place. It keeps most of it out, but not all of it.
@GIYGreenItYourself5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip .. and that sounds super frustrating. It's a problem all over. Nice to be in front of the fire but terrible to be in the smoke-stream.

Is there a buildup of worm castings and compost that you need to remove from the box periodically?
@GIYGreenItYourself6 ай бұрын
Not as much as in a standalone worm farm as they spread the castings through the soil. Still enough to scatter around in potplants through

This is such a waste. The tape is supposed to go on the OUTSIDE of the window frame, so the whole window is covered. The gaps around the edges are where the air seeps through. Not the glass itself. I know you THINK you're turning it into a double pane window, but I promise, this is doing very little if ANYTHING to help keep the air in or out.
@GIYGreenItYourself7 ай бұрын
I think we use it a bit differently here in Australia. We don't have such extreme climate as in US/Canada so we draught-proof the windows and then use this to insulate the glass. Most of our windows are single glazing and double glazing is SUPER expensive. I can totally see your point though. I'm not using it as a draught-proof measure in this case but I reckon if I did it would make a huge difference. I'm just using it as an insulator. And this way I can still open the windows and do't have to take it off in Summer. One day I should try it inside AND out. Might be overkill but .. love an experiement
@jonjacob19627 ай бұрын
@@GIYGreenItYourself alright. Fair enough. When I said outside, I didn't mean on the outside of the house. I meant the outside of the window frame, but on the inside of the house. Where the trim is, we usually put it right on the edge of the trim, enclosing the entire window. But on the inside of the house. Ya know... I know I'm explaining it terribly. Sorry. But yeah, I do see your point. Also, sorry if my original comment seemed a little... rude... I really didn't mean for it to come off like that... Now that I'm re reading it. It really looks snappy. Sorry for that.

Very good and clear illustration of how the self-watering ones are built. Many thanks for that! I really like it and will build one myself. How long does one water filling last and how do you know when to fill water in?
@GIYGreenItYourself7 ай бұрын
You are welcome! Depends on the weather , your level of mulch and what you're growing. I find in the heat and height of summer one filling a week is good when I've got a water-loving crop in (cucumber for example). I just look down the tube and see if I can see the water level. If it's half full it will still wick that water up into the soil. I generally fill it up once a week or when the water tank is full and we're about to get some rain!

for the maggots - don't feed the worms any protein or meat. And keep a lid on the wormfarm to stop them laying eggs in there. That should help. Good luck

Awesome video but can we do same way of sealing on carpets
@GIYGreenItYourself7 ай бұрын
not really. often the gaps are caused by carpets being ripped up and skirting boards are a bit short! you could try 'gap filler rod'. I think I've done a video on that in the draught proofing section. But the carpet also goes a bit towards draught-proofing unless your feeling the breeze under it.
