I appreciate the time and effort put into the time lapse image but I'm afraid it looks utterly fake, the Milky Way has been photoshopped and slapped on the background. Here's a thought, how about showing what it really looks like when you look up at the wonders of the sky from amazing locations - you know, milky and not like a fireworks display cut from a calendar?

It was not clear to me on which setting the shutter sound was louder on the R6ii compared to the R6.
@michaelgoh28845 ай бұрын
actually I think they are both completely when on silent shutter and with a wide open aperture. I think I'd only just noticed since I often shoot 1/3 stop down on the aperture

Hi Michael, thank you for sharing this video! I learned a few things I was unaware of. I do have a question on the R6 Mk ll that I can't find an answer for, so I was hoping that you could help. For astrophotography I use a Venus Optics Laowa RF 15mm F/2 lens (all manual). I was taking night sky photos a couple days ago, and out of roughly 100 images, I am seeing a bit of rotating blur on about half of them - each one has the same amount of motion, and it was real sporadic which shots were good vs. bad. This happened a few weeks ago with a Rokinon EF 14mm F.2.8 lens (manual lens) so I've concluded this isn't a lens issue. The tripod is rock solid, so I know it isn't that. I am thinking it had something to do with the IBIS. This is what I can't find answers on, even in the Canon manual for this camera. The manual is very limited about enabling IS and nothing about disabling IS. So unlike my other cameras that do not have IBIS, I am a bit unfamiliar with this part of the menu system. When I go to the IS (Image Stabilization) Mode in the menu settings, it opens up a sub menu. IS Mode.... on Digital IS ...on Still Photo IS... Always Focal length... 50mm (Im assuming I don't need to worry about that one) So my question is, do I turn all three of these off for astrophotography? Or just one? Thank you!
@michaelgoh28845 ай бұрын
I'd just turn all of them off. I know when IBIS was on it did occassionally show up with the problem. Turning off IS mode and digital IS will automatically turn off still photo IS

Great video. I am an astrophotography novice, but was very pleased with my first astro panorama taken with my inexpensive 14mm 2.8 and full frame camera mounted on a travel tripod whilst on holiday. I wasn't expecting it to work, but it stitched without a problem in Lightroom. My first selfie wasn't too bad either. Without Photopils I would have been in the dark 🤪. And at last someone who mentions the importance of monitor calibration! I can see how people get into this genre.

Another form of light pollution I'm noticing more and more is in super high intensity lights/spotlights on vehicles. I've often had to wait several minutes for a vehicle to approach and pass before being able to capture an image... only for another vehicle to then appear on the horizon. I understand this is considered a safety issue but I do wonder if it's necessary to turn night into day.

Great video Michael, a very important topic. Carol is spot on that we need to reinvent ourselves in how we get people to engage and start travelling and spending money in these smaller towns. It is possible, you only have to look at the success of things like the silo art trail in north western Victoria or the sculpture trail of outback Queensland. Connecting our senses to the landscape and the night sky could be very successful if done right. Ultimately so glad the issue of light pollution seems to be getting some traction now.

I agree with Carol. Losing sight of the stars would be, well I just can't imagjne that. To be in a dark sky area with no light polutiion is something beautiful

What is the 'very substantial amount of work' in the PP that you need to do? I want to do something similar but I hate PP :E What equipment are you using btw?
@michaelgoh28847 ай бұрын
currently it's 4 cameras with fish eye lenses setup in an array to cover up and and triangle of 3. It uses a synchronised intervelometer. With battery packs, dew heaters and ... more. The PP is .... the main part - there is a lot that really the serious astrophotog is probably more accustomed to - having to do with denoising and de-vignetting and then stitching the whole thing into a panorama that is then batched. Also there maybe some conversions for changing of light situation. Then it's putting it together as a movie timelapse. There's a lot more to it than that - and the next few innovations are ... substantially more involved. The thing is that you need to also check each stage just in case to identify faults that might not be readily noticeable in first runs. Even with a serious editing computer - this is at least a few days and more likely a few weeks to process each of these.

I'm hoping to do an astro VR with the normal VR maybe once a month. There is a very substantial amount of work with the astro VR while it's just the one night - the post processing takes a very long time to "get right". While I can't do an aurora all the time ;) - the VR plans coming up are very substantial. There is a lot of theoretical stuff that I'm thinking if this works ...

Worth making the change from the R to R6II? My R is getting up there in shutter count. I use RF 15-35 F2.8 ISO 6400 13 seconds as my typical formula
@michaelgoh28849 ай бұрын
Don't know if the shutter count really is too much of an issue - I think (not yet checked) some of my 6Ds have done more than 200K currently. The R does have the (dis)advantage of a higher MP count - which provides slightly more detail. I personally think the R6ii is a little less noisy. If you do other photography as well (I'm a full time photog) - the R6ii - is absolutely fantastic, the very fast AF, the video is better, 2 card slots, more ergonomic with the 3 dials (shutter ISO and aperture) and I really like the photo to video switch location making some event photography to be materially easier. As with all tech though - more cameras keep coming out - I'm tempted to buy another R6ii (or an R8 or an R5ii and/or a sony camera body or two) as additional cameras.
@calebwhite6815 ай бұрын
Shutter count ratings are not concrete. Just because the shutter count is high, doesn't mean it will die. Ratings are there from the manufacturer to say it will be guaranteed for that point to operate with a certain margin of error. Often after you get past that point, it will continue to work just fine, but may have increased error in the actual performance of the shutter, like the shutter speed itself. This matters if you're shooting sports, but with astrophotography and landscape, who cares about a 250 millisecond deviation in the shutter speed when you're shooting for 10 seconds? (10000 milliseconds) I think the money would be better spent on a star tracker or a new lens you've been wanting. I'm looking to upgrade TO the EOS R, using a 6D astro modded now. I love the 6D though, all the cameras here in question render the milky way detail and color wonderfully. I have the Sony A7 IV for video and daytime use, but I hate how it renders stars and nebulosity.

Great video! I am in a bortle class 4 region and it's extremely difficult to find Sigma Octanis. I use my camera to point exactly to the same direction as my polar scope and then take pictures until sigma octanis is in the middle. That way i can find it more easily. But still, is barely visible.

What lens(es) do you recommend for astrophotography? RF lenses? EF lenses with adapter?
@michaelgoh2884 Жыл бұрын
Salutations - I use the EF to R mount adapter so any "normal" lens will work. The adapter has the filter slot so you can also add light pollution filters that way. I use trackers as well so the focal length isn't so much of an issue. I personally like the fast primes (easier for focusing and generally sharper) - so my preference tends to be like the sigma 35, sigma 85, normally things like the tamron 15-30 but when I'm timelapsing - light lenses are preferable
@preven2296 Жыл бұрын
I don't have a tracker...I would have a concern about the focal length as a result. I am new to the R6 MKii and only have a 16mm. I am thinking of getting a 5d or 6d so i can use a 14mm.@@michaelgoh2884

Greetings, This is awesome, your video is helpful. I've been planning on doing astrophotography and investing a startracker, and your explanation on polar aligment ( especially for southern hemesphere ) is the easiest and most simple I've found.👍🏻👍🏻 by the way I have question, after you did a pointing and angle it to south, how do you fine tuning it through the polar scope if we can not see any bright star? Thank you.
