I got to chapter 4…attempted being the “listener” and was wiped out and more anxious than before. I immediately put the book down for months. I was cleaning my bookshelf today, and decided to give it a go again. I got to the first page in Chapter 5, then jumped to the final chapter. I completely agree with your take of this book…isolating ourselves to this “inner world” isn’t the path to peace. And to say that’s how we connect with God…He created us as mind, body, heart and soul for a reason.
@ChannelsbyKikiАй бұрын
My little theory: You are your soul and body and heart and mind, ALTOGETHER! That’s why it is your responsibility to love God with all of all of those things. When one is effected so are the others. It’s why not getting enough sleep or sunlight or nutrients kill your vibe. It’s why depression and anxiety make you more prone to illness and weight gain. Take care of all of you, your body as well as your soul-your mind as well as your heart. To get a better idea of a Biblical view of heart, mind, soul, and strength, check out The Bible Projects videos on these exact topics.

What’s your thoughts? Fixing the feelings over the problem. One of the repeated recommendations was to stop trying to fix the outside problem and instead fix how you respond to the problem (not closing, remaining open). As a Christian, there is absolutely room to fix the response over the problem. Sure, it’s ok to be upset that the car broke down but HOW upset is it ok to be. It’s not ok to take it out on your spouse or kids or tow truck operator. It’s perfectly normal to be unsettled by unforeseen issues, but it’s not ok to live in constant anxiety about other potential issues. This is our expectation of response to bad things. Firstly, give thanks to God (because trails can produce perseverance, and character, and hope). Then we ask God to give us what we lack, and we move towards him in repentance and obedience. But we still fix the car. Don’t over spiritualize things cause we still live in the world.

As a personal example, a few years back my husband HATED our townhouse. Dark, covered in pine needles, and always had a big problem. I was worried this was a contentment issue(and in some sense it was). It was hard for him to settle there, and he was more irritable than usual. My biggest concern was that no place would be enough for him, but when we moved to our apartment (even though it was smaller), he never had as bad of issue as in that townhouse. Men are more like that though. It wasn’t some spiritual issue of discontentment, it was a physical discomfort first, then a contentment issue. When we “fixed” the problem, we fixed the spiritual issue along with it.

What’s your thoughts? Remaining “open” verses “closed.” Open is a state of being receptive and allowing energies of all types to flow freely through you. Being closed is an attempt to “protect” the self that ends up trapping the bad in and keeping the good out. That’s my understanding of the argument at least. At face value, how do you respond to the “flow or energy” idea and the potential virtue of attempting to “remain open.” If you’ve read the book, all the more open for discussion on point like this.

What’s your thoughts? One argument the book makes is what I call the Subject-object ordeal. Anything you can see, touch, taste, feel, or anything that can be experienced as an “object” is not you, the “subject.”

Do you struggle to enjoy difficult things? I certainly do, especially since the propaganda machine told me to do whatever feels good. But this book encouraged me to view difficulties as challenges to overcome. Failure, being backed into a corner, the grind of discipline, all can be the exercise of the strengthening of your mind, will, and determination.

fellow pk here. you have no idea how much i relate to what you shared. when i tell you i’ve been feeling the *presssureee* to find + pursue that “dream” career or just go straight into ministry, i’ve been feeeeeeling it. i feel so weird cuz i don’t actually have a dream career, at all. but same, all God wants for me is to just LIVE! as for where He wants me right now in life, heck if i know haha. i’m just trying to be faithful with what’s been put in front of me + do my best to pursue what i feel He’s put on my heart. thanks so much for sharing your experience. we can’t be the only pk’s let alone young christians who feel like this 😅.

@@angeldotel5786 Glad to know I’m not the only one (aside from my brothers 😅, that is). Yea, honestly a big part of my recovery from that pressured way of thinking was to be responsible for today and this week. I’m thankful God has helped me get my week in order so then I can start planning months ahead (I’m still not quite to planning in years, tho). But ultimately I come back to the parable of the talents and the servants. God gives us what we are capable of taking care of with his strength. I don’t wanna be the servant that hides my talents in the dirt. I need to be willing to learn how to manage appropriate risk. At times I feel overwhelmed with my plate, but I quickly remind myself how it’s an honor to have the problems I have knowing God will get the glory and I can decide with him how to handle it… but that’s just my two cents ❤️

@@ChannelsbyKiki beautifully said. the parable of the talents has been on my heart for a while now. there’s this quote I’m reminded of whenever I read it: “talent is God’s gift to you. w I’m running to get there hat you do with it is your gift to God.” - leo buscaglia glad you’re making progress in your journey. following God is difficult to say the least, but He’s truly with us every step of the way. you should make more videos like this like this; i enjoyed it. :)

Fun video! On a mac, if you press option+Command+B, it will separate your audio from your video. That way you can cut out audio or video that you don't like without effecting the other. And you can slip in music clips where you cut out audio! You can also cut your video clips where you cut out text and you can speed up those sections! (I am very new to imovie and learning how to do this all on my own too).
