Whadda waste of a perfectly good battleship. She deserved to be preserved or at least put in storage for emergency in the future.

Vanguard should have been preserved with the Warrior, kind of a beginning of the battleship and the end. In the US we have all four Iowa Class battleships, as well as the South Dakota Class and North Carolina Class, and the oldest dreadnought designed battleship left from WWI, the Texas as museums. I get we have a lot more resources in the US than the UK, but the UK could not preserve one battleship? A damn shame really

A great shame that it was not preserved as a museum. Even if England were in war debt they could easily afford to keep at least one real battleship. 5:27: couldn't bear to see any more .. Vandalism

What an outrageous waste of money, a huge white elephant, as the ship was obsolete by the time it was launched. The Admiralty had the opportunity in the early 40's to turn the ship into an aircraft carrier where it could have been far more usefully employed but stupidly turned that idea down. The ship ended up spending its short career serving as a vanity project for the Royals.

Britian should have preserved the Warspite or one of the KGV class ships. Vanguard wasn't as significant

Battleships!! Giant ships with huge guns for blasting each other in open water. None of this 'strategy' rubbish. Those were the days.

Sad but necessary. Only one thing, her guns did fire in anger. It was 1917 and they were on Glorous an Couragouus which got involved with a small German contigent.

Some armour from the Vanguard was used in the Sheffield River Don Works apprentice shop as the floor, I was an apprentice in the early 70s don't think I ever damaged it.

I bet the UK no longer has the ability to build a ship like Vanguard, we probably don't even have the facility to scrap something that size.

The fact the naval command didn't see the possibilities as a major tourist attraction is absolutely beyound me, one of the worst choice britian made, yes the metal was well sort after the war, but still especially if it was placed on the river tems, it would have easily made its money back and some, utter shame, if I made a couple of billion I'd definitely splash out for a replacement vangard just to show the proes of what britian lost when they cut her up to make razer blades

She should have been kept as the last Battle Ship of the Royal Navy, she would be such a great asset for tourism.

In April 1949, the Third Field Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was preparing to launch a cross-river operation in the Zhenjiang section of the Yangtze River the next day. The British Navy's Far East Fleet frigate "HMSAmethyst" ignored the People's Liberation Army's announcement of April 20, 1949, the deadline for foreign ships to evacuate the Yangtze River, and broke into the People's Liberation Army's front line to cross the river section. After disobeying the warning and being shelled by the People's Liberation Army, the "Amethyst" immediately fired back. During the artillery battle, the "Amethyst" was seriously damaged and ran aground. From the afternoon of April 20 to 21, the People's Liberation Army artillery will successively arrive for reinforcements from the British Navy's Far East Fleet destroyer HMS Consort, heavy cruiser HMS London, and frigate HMS Black. Swan) repelled. Subsequently, the Chinese People's Liberation Army and the United Kingdom initiated contacts and negotiations on the issue of responsibility for the incident and the detention of the "Amethyst", but no results have been achieved. On July 30, 1949, the "Amethyst" escaped during the night and exchanged fire again with the People's Liberation Army artillery on the way. On July 31, the "Amethyst" escaped from the Yangtze Estuary, and the relevant negotiations between the Chinese People's Liberation Army and the United Kingdom were terminated. In the "Amethyst" incident, the Chinese People's Liberation Army suffered 252 casualties, and the British Navy suffered 45 deaths, 1 missing, and 93 injuries. The "Amethyst" also caused heavy casualties among civilians during its escape. This incident demonstrated the firm determination and strong courage of the Chinese Communist Party, which is about to establish a new China, to defend national sovereignty. This incident also marked the final end of the "gunboat diplomacy" of Great Britain and other powers in China.

It’s hard to believe that that ship was not worth more money as scrap, considering all of the tons of pre-atomic steel and armor plate that are truly a limited resource.

Can you imagine the sense of forlorn and melancholy on that final 5-day voyage to the breakers? Her engines dark, her cabins bared, her decks an empty, creaking hulk where once there was so much energy and life. Can you imagine how it must've felt to be one of only 60 out of 1,600 chosen to sunset her? How it must've felt to look out over the open sea and watch the going down of the sun from the wooden decks of a line-of-battle ship, a tradition that predates recorded history, for the final time ever? Heartbreaking.
