These are all new words. I need to find a way to understand Portuguese words without translating them into English. I still have to translate “Aqui” in my head into English to understand it when I see or hear it. When learning a new Portuguese word I connect it to the corresponding English word and it seems to be permanently attached. When I hear or see them I have to translate all of them one word at a time which is a slow process. After studying for 10 years I still don’t understand what people are saying because everything usually sounds like gibberish and I have to translate everything. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi. For concrete words, you can always use images when learning new words. For example: maçã 🍎, telefone ☎️, sapato 👞, mão ✋️. Next step is to create simple sentences with these words. Don't start with complicated sentences. Nail the very basics first. For example: eu como uma maçã. Eu tenho um telefone. Etc... Good luck.

@ thanks. Thats where I am now, I can point and say the names of many things. I can’t understand what people are saying so when I say something I can’t understand the response so it prevents conversations. Verbs and words like “Subjuntivo” are difficult to learn with images. There are so many words for each verb and they are difficult for me to keep straight in my mind. Especially the verbs that begin with “V”. Vai, vao, vim, vem, vir, ver and others. I have hope and a good attitude but I need to explain what I struggle with which is why I mention these problems. I appreciate your help!

@ Moqueca is the only word I’ve learned without translating and when I see or hear it I don’t have to translate it into English. I learned it at a restaurant. There is no English translation for it. I saw it and asked what the name was and I ate it. I remembered it too. I just need to find a way to do that with several thousand words critical for conversing and learn how to use them.

I couldn’t understand some of the words and I’ve been studying Portuguese for 10 years. I’ve visited Brasil 19 times and have been practicing every day for 7 years with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese but I still can’t understand her and I have to translate everything into English to understand which is very slow. I need to find a way to learn and understand without translating everything. I have to translate very basic words like “aqui” because even though I recognize it visually as a word I know I don’t instantly know what it means when I hear it so I have to translate it in my head. When translating an entire sentence in my head when I hear it takes too long so I don’t understand everything.

Just keep practicing. It is vital to study actively every day and be exposed to the language. You can try to read more and avoid translating it. Just try to get the gist of it based on the words you know and the context. This can help you recognise the words more and more with time.

I had never heard of the verb “to be” and my Portuguese teacher was surprised that I had never heard of it. She said I should have learned in in English class in the U.S. but I hadn’t had an English class in junior high school or high school. She said she couldn’t teach me Portuguese if I hadn’t learned it.

You know the verb. You just used in the sentence "my teacher WAS surprised". Don't worry about if you have learned it or not. Just think practically how to use it in real life. Good luck!

@ I know how to use it in English because I learned it without knowing it. Now that I have to learn it in Portuguese I don’t know what the teachers are referring to so I have to stop and think about it and translate which takes extra time. Learning Portuguese has been very difficult for me and after 10 years of studying I still can’t read or understand what people are saying. I’ve visited Brasil 19 times and I still can’t converse. I study and practice every day. I visited Fortaleza last month but I couldn’t understand what people were saying but my son could and he’s never studied Portuguese. He just picked it up from visiting Brasil with me. It’s very frustrating because I’ve always wanted to learn a language. I think it’s amazing when people can do it.

What does “Sou advogado” mean? Am attorney? Why isn’t it “Eu estou um advogado?

Sou advogado = I am a lawyer. For occupations, in Portuguese, we always use "ser" and we do not use um/uma. Sou médica, ele é bombeiro, nós somos professores, eles são mecânicos.

@ I don’t understand why certain words are left out from some sentences but are used when it’s translated and in other sentences there are extra words in the sentence that aren’t used like “O Brasil” when translated it’s just “Brazil”. So “Sou advogado” translates as “Am attorney” but it’s actually “I am an attorney” but “O Brasil” translates as “The Brasil” but its actually “Brasil”. I need to find a way to understand this. Thanks

Watching videos doesn’t help because I don’t understand new things without translating them. How do I know if “Ele” means “It” or “He”? When I see or hear it? Thanks for the help!

Casa, and maca sound the same to me. The two sounds are the same to me and my teachers say my pronunciation is fantastic.

The letter As in casa and marca are the same. Only the vowels sound different. Now, maçã 🍎 has 2 different vowel sounds. The one in MA is same as the As in casa. But the second a sounds more nasal, a bit close to the filler "uhmmmm" sound you make when you are thinking while speaking. I hope it helps!

"Criatura" is a great example of why I like to read translations of literature, poetry, music lyrics, etc. side by side with the original, even if I have only a general familiarity with the source language. A good translator probably would choose "beast", "animal", or perhaps, in extreme cases, "monster", as the English translation of "criatura", depending on the context and what the author/speaker/singer is trying to express. But without having the original for deeper context, someone reading the translation might not pick up that the connotation of these English words, when used in place of "criatura", are ones that today seem old-fashioned. For example, imagine you're watching an English or American movie made before 1960, and a character (typically one who is relatively well-educated and/or upper-class) says, "Get your hands off me, you beast!" or "That animal [referring to someone who is being rude] has no manners."

great video! muito obrigada. Dormir até mais tarde é uma das minhas atividades preferidas. Geralmente acordo muito cedo nos dias da semana. Por isso, eu gosto muito de "hibernar" nos sabados e domingos. Eu me acordo às 11 horas da manhã mais ou menos. Durante o fim de semana, estou cansada. Então, eu prefiro ficar em casa e fazer atividades mais caseiras. Eu gosto de assistir séries na TV. Ultimamente estou fazendo muito exercício físico. Eu acordo mais cedo nos dias da semana para fazer exercício antes de o meu trabalho. É muito bom para espairecer e ter mais energia.

Então, a sua frase ficaria: "Eu acordo às 11 horas..." A outra observação é que você pode unir a preposição de e o artigo o (de+o=do). Então, você pode dizer "antes do meu trabalho". Bons estudos! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
