Around 1988 I saw one of these in a fairly sad state next to the roadside outside Paphos, Cyprus.

Make no mistake the X1/9 with some bolt on suspension upgrades, twin 40's on the later 1500cc engine, along with an 4 branch exhaust manifold and sports silencer ; makes a great, great, great fun car. Better still do some head work and remove some weight you have the fastest small sports car on the road.

Many thanks Johnny. Notice that this car has been designed by Dany Brawand, a swiss designer that spent 12 years at Michelotti's place before taking the position of chief designer at Moretti!

In Switzerland there was an ad for a car like that last year. The asking price was over 75000$. seeing the engine brings back memories: My first car an early Fiat 127 had the same engine in the front of course. I know that the 850 coupes had a higher hp rating that the Fiat 127. I think the difference was the carb setup. In those days the cars were BEAUTIFUL. Specially the Italian coupes. I think the cars built after 1972 were never that beautiful anymore

Such a beauty - I would love one of these and have never seen one in the metal. This green car is based on the Mark 1 Fiat 850. Very interesting, as you say. And the 'ordinary' 850 Coupe was also a great car.

I was lucky enough to grow up in Rome in the early 70's where all these cars would be seen and taken for granted ! The Roman Bus drivers were my heroes. Driving manual gearboxed buses - double declutching and keeping up speed all the time like they were racing a Ferrari ! I loved that time. Together of course with the Restaurants, the Italians, the Vespas, Moto Morini, Laverda, Ducati, Lancia, Fiat etc. What a time to grow up with all the "left over" cars from the 60's still on the roads. AND of course the Roman Ruins of Emperor Julius Ceasar still standing to this day !

Abarth built the 1300/124 which was based on the 850 coupe. He also built the Scorpione (sp?) with the same 1300cc drivetrain. The stock 850s had a 4.63 or 4.88 ring and pinion iirc. The Abarth 1300cc cars had 3.50 or 3.70 r&p. These 1300cc cars were ideal for American driving conditions whereas the stock 850s were really city cars.

I like the way you can drop in a 2-litre motor and get the weight down to 650kg and win hillclimbs in 2022 like Manuel Dondi. And I like the way you can drop in a bike engine and get the weight down to 550kg like Davide Cironi. And I like the way Dallara modified the car to be successful in Group 5. And I like the way Dallara modified that car into a prototype Stradale and put it in the foyer of their museum. Dude, even a bog standard X1/9 has a 5-speed transaxle like a modern car, bucket and shim valve clearance like a modern car, all round disc brakes like a modern car, and an integral b-pillar rollover bar like a modern car. Not to mention it was engineered to pass what is basically an earlier version of the current crash test. Or that a 1500 with a single carb will sail through the latest most stringent UK emissions tests, by a bigger margin than most moderns. But anyway, point taken Pontiac guy and "see you on the road, skag".

@@m.e.345 I'm doing a projector headlamp conversion, using four 90mm Hella lamps in place of the pop up unit. I had to square out the lower corners of the apertures in the body and mount the lamps inside the body. This will require me to make an outer lens from clear acrylic to finish flush. This part also closes off the aperture from water ingress, unlike with popups. Three times the wattage, half the weight, all bulb options inc gas discharge. Also way more aerodynamic. But I'm in the UK and this is on a car with a full bumper delete inc screw in tow eyes and a modified serie speciale front spoiler. I had to install the spoiler at a shallower angle because the whole car is lowered 3" on coilovers. Still no idea if the headlamps can be set up to pass the MoT but I'm hopeful.
