How do they enter the trap and how does it secure them inside?
@AVB2-LST11544 ай бұрын
When they want in they stick their noses under the bottom of the net and get under it. As it crosses over their backs it raises no concern as they are used to rooting under bushes. The bottom of the net extends about three feet inwards and lays on the ground.. When they have eaten and want to leave they approach the net like they did when entering, but they are now standing on the bottom of the net and it will not lift up like it did when they entered from the outside. Ingenious!

Red deer will dig up tubers/bulbs they like, and are likely to paw something like ply covers if they feel like it. Wapiti would be highly likely to also. How similar other deer species behaviour is would be interesting. Deer key in on particular feeds. It's possible if they get a taste of something unexpected in corn/bait they would leave it alone. If corn could be impregnated internally with something unpleasant (meat/egg protein, pepper?) without it being externally detectable it might repel them. Had a fawn that would grab cooked veges off the dinner plate that accidentally grabbed a bit of meat one day, spat it out and poked it's tongue in & out trying to get rid of the obviously horrible taste, & stopped it's annoying behaviour henceforth. Concealing such unpalatable flavour in a manner it's undetectable until eaten is the challenge. Note deer seem to avoid poison baits if they get a sub-lethal dose (supposed to be relatively colourless, odour less & tasteless), which suggests learned behaviour. Unpalatable plants get similar treatment.

can someone please explain why they don't just burrow back out the way they came in? When new hogs enter there are gaps where they can lift the net further with their snouts and exit. Perplexing
@MMMmyshawarma6 ай бұрын
The net at the bottom curves inward. The pigs naturally root under brush, so moving forward under something and letting the net fall off their back doesn't spook them. Once inside, the position of the net on the ground makes them stand on it while trying to root to get back out. They haven't realized they are keeping themselves in. It also looks like the inner circle of net is anchored down at several points, so it's less likely the net bottom is pushed outward.
@MMMmyshawarma6 ай бұрын
Also, there's not a whole lot of unnatural noises with a net, so they don't panic en mass if one decides to leave, spends some time trying to get out, but ultimately sticks around and eats some more.

Interesting to watch the hog behavior after they realize that they are trapped. They could chew thru the net. But don’t stick with it. They will grab a mouthful and pull a bit. Last, they had to “dig” under to get into the pen for the bait corn. But it never occurs to them to try the same to get out.
@RennieAsh Жыл бұрын
They think it's bushes. They don't realise that once inside, the beginning of the net isn't at their front feet, but the back. Even if they dig the same way they got in, it wouldn't work. They would likely fail the step on towel trolley test
