The early style piston has a smaller diameter thread, so the trick of using the hand brake rod doesn’t work. Any tips to remove those? My stud will not thread all the way so the piston will not retract fully. TIA!

Hi are the calipers sprayed or anodised?

Always pull on the stationary jaw on pliers and vice grips. The teeth are engineered that way. Great video.

Just a terrific video! Could I please trouble you to make a list of tools required, perhaps as a footnote? My 914 has the early calipers and as such needs a (very!) thin-wall 11mm socket! Also I couldn't hear what the special bit for the head of the connecting bolts was. I'm guessing RIBE? Otherwise, splendid job and thank you!

Thanks for this video, immensely helpful. But, what a stupid design, that the part that fails is the second-to-the-last part you remove from the assembly.

I have lost count of the number of times that I have shared this video with fellow Mazda MX5/Eunos/Miata owners. Your instructions for removing the auto adjuster (15:40) are an absolute lifesaver for anyone considering refurbishing their rear calipers as this is not described anywhere else. Great video.

Lots of views...very few comments. First thank you for the detail and work you put into this video years ago. I appreciate having a resource for the choice to DIY. And the complete attention to detail is what makes it thorough. Now if I can only find one of the little push rods that feel on the shop floor....:-)

Im rebuilding a pair of early rear calipers, where do I get the 4 M7 bolts +nuts that hold the caliper together?

To remove the first piston I wound the piston all the way out with the adjuster and with liberal wd40 I used the handbrake lever to push the piston another 2mm out. then release the lever and pushed the piston back in ( initially i had to knock in with wood and hammer) and push back out with handbrake lever. Repeat until you can easily move with your hand and use grips to pull out. Great video by the way.

… they say if you split the halves, they will leak because the mating surfaces although torqued down all these years yet due to heat cycles, the halves have a tendency to spring out of plane when the halves are separated. Much the same dynamics that exhaust manifolds and heads tend to do the same and need to be true surfaced at a machine shop, not sure if you can do this with caliper halves without diminishing the travel specs of the pistons…

Looking at buying a '74 914 that has been sitting in a garage for 10 years. Pretty sure I will be rebuilding the calipers. Excellent video and detail. It really makes the job look manageable.

Hi, please, could you help me :) You seem yo know what you are doing :) I have a Skoda with a crazy TRW rear left brake caliper, brake getting hot (warm).. I rebuild the caliper with new seals (doublechecked). a new brake hose. all parts lubed and everything moves nice, brakepads loose ands lubed.. handbrake wire detached.. still the brake disk gets warm.. do you know whats wrong inside the caliper? maybe the spring? or selfadjusting mecanism? what is responsible to push the brake caliper cylinder backwards?.. my cylinder moves back just a half mm. or less. the brakedisk moves almost as free as the right one..

These guys are great. Very good to deal with and the end product is better than new. Thanks PMB for the four new calipers for my '71 914.

Really nice job. I tried the other guy's instructions, and they aren't NEARLY as good. I will check out your website next, as you are far more deserving of my business. I wish I had bought your rear caliper kit, as mine did not have all of the parts. Thank you.
