Can you use oil sticks rather than melting crayons?
@Miriamjoy12317 сағат бұрын
Sure, you could do it with any product like oil sticks or wax rub-ons.

Use an oil based Varnish. Brush on or Spray Varnish is fine. There is a new water based oil varnish out by miniwax. A type of Polyacyrlic. you can find it at Walmart.

I wasn't sure what you put in the glass dropper? It seems like you had the eye dropper in a melting pot to get it hot? What exactly is a melting pot. Also you melted a white crayola crayon to put in the eye dropper. I tried to read the script but I am having trouble understanding exactly what/how you worked with the eue dropper. Also, I used a pan of hot water to melt my crayons in a glass ornament but I like the dryer you have (I have one too) so I am gonna try that.

What a coincidence! I just (as in "minutes ago") checked out one of the few books my library has on gourds: your Wax on Gourds. (Now I just have to figure out how to scale this down to the Tennessee spinners that arrived over the weekend (I didn't want to waste space on big gourds before I decided whether or not I wanted to get into the craft.)
@Miriamjoy123Ай бұрын
Please remember you can color a gourd with anything, including cool-aid. It is just nature's canvas. Use what you have and start there. Have fun and ask if you have any questions. Have fun, Miriam Joy

@@Miriamjoy123 Right now, I'm figuring out the most effective knife for lopping off their bottoms. My mom likes bells, and a well-placed cut not only corrects for an off-center stem (which disqualifies them as true spinners), but I can trim down the cut-off into a clapper. I'm thinking I can raid my pysanka kit for its kistka and do some modified egg designs.

I have heard you should bleach them first so they don’t mold. Is that necessary?
@Miriamjoy1236 ай бұрын
I use the ones that they make tamales with and it is not necessary but if you used ones that were not prepared first, that would be a good idea. It would also help with your color. The husk is yellow in color. That makes colors like blue turn green.

Hi. Really enjoy your work and love your teaching method. Question. Are any of your vases waterproof. Can they be used for live flowers?
@Miriamjoy1236 ай бұрын
Hi Roberta, Thank you for the question. They are not waterproof. I prefer to set a waterproof vase or container in the guard. With that said, you can use Flex Seal. The spray-on rubber sealer they advertise on TV. I would do that before you decorate the gourd and make sure it is waterproof. Hope this helps. Miriam joy

Hi Miriam. I would like to ask you if you give the gourd a base to cover the pores before applying the alcohol inks. Thank you very much.
@Miriamjoy1238 ай бұрын
I normally do not but with that said, it does help to even out the porous of the gourd. Also if you want bright colors a base with gesso or white acrylic paint is good to start with.
@lacasademaderadeTximi8 ай бұрын
Thanks for answering me. I would like to know why you have such bright colors on the gourd if you don't give it a previous base.
@Miriamjoy1238 ай бұрын
@@lacasademaderadeTximi You can still have bright colors. Just remember that the gourd is yellow and you have to adjust. This means if you use a blue alohol ink on a gourd you might get more of a green color. There is nothing wrong with doing it straight on the gourd. I love alcohol inks. They have a life on their own. You can also use the alcohol ink white color first and then your other colors. Do not be afraid to apply the color again if you want more color. Hope this helps.

May I ask what finish you use to protect your gourd when your done?
@Miriamjoy12311 ай бұрын
Thank you for the question. It depends on what type of method I used to dye or color the gourd. I usually spray varnish but if the color is steadfast you can also use brush on varnish. It should be dry about in a day. It depends on a lot of factors. How warm it is. How humid it is, how thick your string is, and how much you put on.
