Thanks great vid. Shocked the air filter is actually pretty easy to access for a Bmw. Lot of bikes I owned you have to take the tank off.

Hi from Australia, I’ve viewed this instructional video of yours in the past. I checked again today to jog my memory with some of the more subtle tricks involved. Thank you for taking the time to assist other XR owners 👍. Cheers.

any thoughts on how to eliminate the buzzing that comes from that cowling around the ignition when you hit about 6,500 rmp? seems to go away at 7k but it really bugs me.

Great tutorial. But, I too wonder how you got the plastic push pins removed so the lower fairing can come off? I couldn't get them off and ended up just working around the (pushed to the side) lower fairing. Had to use XL channel locks to remove filter too. My rubber strap remover couldn't get enough grip to vise it off, because I agree a screw driver is the wrong method.

I laughed about your correction (wrench not screwdriver).. BUT.. oil filters with the big weird tool required.. or ones that dont have a way to use a wrench.. to remove them.. most folks just stab them with a flat head screw driver.. and off they come!

How did you remove the plastic push pins in the first place?

Thanks! Very helpful. Took me an hour on first attempt as I couldn't pull the filter element out because it was too snug and was worried about breaking something. But, your wire clearing tutorial on installation helped a great deal. I feel I can do it in 15 minutes on next replacement.

My Husqvarna FE501 didn't need a valve adjustment until almost 250 hours, and I'm not nice to it. Cool video, and this stuff should be checked for sure... but these KTM engines aren't the delicate and temperamental things some people make them out to be.

Have KTM four strokes changed the valves in their four strokes in recent years? Going back to 2006-2008 I use to ride with a guy that had a KTM 525 and he only ever checked his valve clearances once every 6 months and adjusted/serviced them once a year and his bike never skipped a beat.

I would suggest changing oil at 4000 miles and When draining oil leaning bike on left and right side to get all of oil drained out.

Really? Why change at 4000 miles? BMW requirement is 6K & I'm just a commuter....Not racing. The synthetics are capable oils for high mileage as well. Really interested to know what drives you on this one.
@EEEBA1
@EEEBA1 4 ай бұрын
@@davee6727I prefer to change the oil around 4-5 K at the latest rather than wait until 6 K. I understand the BMW recommendations but the bike shifts better with cleaner oil. That's just my opinion.

Also, I neglected to read my service manual and rode 8 hours before doing this. How much potential damage could I have done in 8 hours? Thanks in advance
@willstief4383
@willstief4383 6 жыл бұрын
Rowdy_ Moto Not adjusting the valves won’t cause any damage. And most likely, your valves were still in spec after only 8 hours.

each valve was out of spec :/ and they suggest every 30hrs
@willstief4383
@willstief4383 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah if they're a little out of spec it's usually no big deal. As long as the valves aren't hitting the piston it doesn't usually cause any problems. And, usually after the first adjustment, when they are "broken in" they won't need adjusted nearly as often.

I wish the dealership had mentioned this little tidbit to me upon my purchase of an 450 exc 2017. Plus work has to be done at dealership as to not void warranty. 350$ CAD maintenance bill after only an hour out of the lot!

Just did my one hour check on a 2018. Similar results, valves are tight. Exhaust both are .07 and Intake valves at .05 and .07.

Can you make a short video on finding T.D.C. Was planning on doing mine but I only have the mark on the cam shaft sprocket and can't find any other marks to line up. Are the 2017's not the same.
@pennycan6926
@pennycan6926 7 жыл бұрын
My bike didn't have the second mark on the cap either. I placed the cam sprocket mark at 1200 and just watched the valves closely to ensure all 4 were closed.

I also have a '17 500, im at about 11 hours and waiting for service manual to arrive in mail before I do my first valve check. Should I go ahead and order a shim kit? I want to have everything needed when I start the project.

Very strange. I have a 2019 500 EXC F and if I remember correctly first valve check is recommended at 30 -50 hours I think it was ? Did not say anything about 1 hour valve clearance check for mine at least... 3 hours is the run in of the engine and first oil change at 10 hours. After that every 15 hours (about 750km) oil change if not racing if I remember correctly. Most I have hard that do not ride hard say they never needed to re shim the valves as they did stay in spec.

I'm really surprised that after one hour you had to adjust your valves. I have. 2014 500 exc with 250 hours and 10,000 miles the valves are still in spec.
