Hi Dominique, Thanks a lot for your blog post. I am moving to Finland soon and I have a 15 year old autistic son who will be coming with me. I'm searching school or therapy for him. Do you have any suggestion as to what institution should I go, once I arrive in Helsinki. Thx

You may have picked a wrong kind of salmiakki to try, because that's one of the stronger kinds. For example, supersalmiakki would be a bit milder and it has some menthol in it too, I think. Kind of the "point" of salmiakki is that it makes you salivate (which is why they put ammonium chloride in cough medicine). Basically, as you stick one in your mouth you taste the salt and then the saliva comes in, neutralising the salt, and you end up with a balanced salty sweetness.

+blechtic I have since tried Salmari alcohol and it was kind of gross too but it did get a bit sweeter at one point.

One tradition about finnish sauna and why you go in there naked is because in front of the stove EVERYONE is equal, so you drop your social status along with your clothes in the changing room and on the benches everyone sits as equals, for example if a company group goes for a relaxing trip in the sauna the bosses and the root-level workers will be equals naked sweating on the benches! Also one way to understand this is if you go alone, you leave your protective shell along with your clothes and just sit there full naked infront of the stove, and for many a finnish person its a moment where we can face our selves truly without anything in between us and reality. Other traditions include that the person throwing the water always stays last like a captain in a sinking ship, also one is that when you have thrown the water and it makes the hissing sound on the rocks, its courteous to not talk until the stove quiets down - this is called "the moment when the saunatonttu is talking" and its rude to interrupt him! Sauna for teh win!

I never get tired of hearing about hubsters travel blunders. I know it's not funny, but I can't help but laugh! I mean if he didn't have bad luck, he'd have none at all. But that being said... at least he makes it home. lol

Thanks for your blog post on Finnish benefits. I'm researching early care for young children with disabilities in Finland from here in Maryland USA. If you don't mind me asking, did your child (V-man) receive specialized instruction or behavioral therapy in the specialized daycare? Is instruction using Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) common in Finland for students with Autism? Is V-man in a special or regular school now that he is over 6 years old?

+gemcdonagh Hi! Thanks for reaching out to me! ABA is not commonly used here (at least with V-Man and our experiences) - his therapists focuses have been mainly through PECS (picture exchange communication system). He is currently in a neuro-typical school but with a specialized group of 6 children (maximum). He is starting a year early than a neuro-typical child (7 years old) with the aims of graduating at the same time as his peers of the same birth year. They do teach life skills and social skills in the school and the teachers are specialized for a variety of special needs. Hope that made sense and helped! Feel free to message me with more questions and I can try to find the answers for you! :)
