"In our survey, users state that smooth surfaces, tram rails and holes in the road are the three main causes of accident. She points out that if bicycle lanes and street roads are adjusted to take on e-scooters, the pedestrians will be safer and have the sidewalks to themselves again - and e-scooterists can ride without life as an effort." nordicroads.com/e-scooters-popular-among-norwegians/

In conclusion, no one dies and seems unlikely that anyone will. What does happen is that a LOT of people get thru in the cycle phase compared to the motor vehicle phases.

You are obviously not from anywhere in Europe. For one they do not simply cross. Secondly, every single driver knows they have to give way in every possible scenario. Thirdly, NOT properly yielding to cyclists does not by definition mean an accident or even a dangerous situation. Fourthly, cyclists are protected by law from any motor-traffic-related accident and the drivers know this.

Haren's "Shared Space" is a horrible place to ride a bicycle. One of the very worst that I have found since I emigrated to the Netherlands. It was on my commuting route and I instead found a back road to use, which unfortunately also carried rat-running motor vehicles who also avoid going through the "Shared Space". Motorists do not give way to cyclists emerging from the right and they do not allow pedestrians to cross the road. Pedestrians have to run. "Might is right".

@maxxoccupancy What!!! 'Only' 3 accidents every ten years for every intersection? So in a town with only ten intersections you have three accidents every year?? That's not a good safety record at all. Just compare safety records in the US and Holland. Holland is very densely populated, has the highest ratio of cyclists in the world and still has the safest traffic. US are off by 5 times as many accidents.

They could have made at least the cycle crossings red

Lol. I know this is old. But I wanted to point out that there are a lot of concepts you don't realize are being used. Some studies show that when things are over labeled or have designated space then people become less cautious and therefore the situation becomes more dangerous. Stuff like bicycle lanes sometimes become more dangerous because cars will give them less room when they see the space the bicyclist is allowed vs when they have to determine the space themselves. Giving the cyclist a space that they feel is their own might make the cyclist less cautious about cars because they feel they own their space just as cars feel they own their own space on the road. When you feel you own the space you assume far to often that you have the right away and others have to look out for you with out any consideration of looking out for others. The safetynet makes it more dangerous. This is an example of a shared space where the lines between different modes of transportation are purposely blurred. That why even the curbs are low so that the pedestrian space doesn't feel so seperate from the road. Cars will drive slower if they feel that pedestrians or even cyclist can enter the road at any moment. It feels backward but it been proven in a lot of places that it can work. Letting the cars drive faster doesn't necessarily make things more efficent and making the roads safer doesn't always make people drive safer. This video was trying to show that this "squareabout" is actually working. Traffic is continously flowing. Bicyclists concerned about their own safety use hand singals. Walkers look both ways. Cars yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. The system is working. The idea of adding an extra label is trying to fix a problem that isn't there which may or may not result in making things worse. I'm not sure if it is a perfect system. I am only doing light research on this for a project. But these are at least some of the concepts behind shared space.

There actually were some examples of right of way in your video; there are just some people who don't trust others and thus let them pass when they actually have right of way (because they come from the right) and there are those want to go across and come from the right, but have to stop because of yield lines.
@hendrikbijloo3 жыл бұрын
Hi Femsuii, that’s not how it works with all direktions green. All directions get a green signal and are allowed to go. This means that the ”coming from the right has right of way rule” doesn’t apply. The markings on the ground and signs only apply when the lights are not working (blinking yellow or no lights at all). So there is no right of way rule and the byciclist simply have to figure out amongst themselve who goes first 😁

With bicycles it's pretty easy to find your way in chaos like this.. It takes a little experience and off you go... But with cars which can alternate their speed and position fast, makes it a lot more difficult to predict your path through this kind of chaos without making crashes....

Also with cyclists, you can read another cyclists' body language. If you think you're going to collide with another cyclist, you can see if they're still pedaling, if they have their hands on the brakes, and if they noticed you approaching; and judge whether to slow down or to keep going with no traffic calming
@assailant8513 жыл бұрын
overtaking a cyclist right on a pedestrian crossing and voila, there's the first occasion where an accident could happen.
@CCmachine13 жыл бұрын
@maxxoccupancy Maybe in your country, but where bicycles are common this setup works properly. Where are your numbers from? It's a great idea to make cars give way to bicycles. Remember, there's the red paint for the cycle path where it crosses the road and give way marks

@Lunavii_Cellest3 жыл бұрын

@patrickoudejans16 жыл бұрын
