I'm one of those who knows the original version. I'm Italian and my father was a partisan. It's true that the so called "Mondine" sang this song. But I can not find any differences when it comes to the lyrics. I find the arrangements, the acoustics solo marvelous and new. Tom Waits'voice underlines the true narrative and the strong symbolic of this peace of art. Please if you don't speak Italian, be so kind, don't take my statement too personal, but I found a big lack of modesty in your affirmation.

Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash about five years before this concert. Some of the players (Clapton and Robert Cray among others) were on the bill with SRV at Alpine Valley at what was to be his last show. Clapton was actually supposed to be on the helicopter with SRV. Some of the other players at this concert were people who influenced SRV and were friends with him, like BB King. The backing band is Double Trouble. They were SRV’s band. The other guitarist on this song is Jimmie Vaughan. That was SRV’s brother. They also recorded together.
