Another old trick...ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES!
@stevenconnor4221 Жыл бұрын
You won't get a concentric hole. Grind your drill so that it trepans it. Plus that plate isn't thin try doing it on shim lol.
@tymz-r-achangin Жыл бұрын
We dont even bother trying to use a drill in that large of a hole in thin metal. Just use a hole saw.
@davidbiser7231 Жыл бұрын
We used water for ss. And a little more speed .

Make one wonder who or how someone came up with the idea. Did someone get their shirt sleeve caught in the drill, and after the fact seen how perfect the hole was? 😁

Never saw but usually use a step drill or drill tree as they are sometimes called

Next time try drilling a Small PILOT hole First ! Use an End Mill to "Bore" the hole OR just SANDWICH the sheet between TWO Slightly thicker sheets and Drill thru all 3 of them ! Been There ! Done it Hundreds of times .....Works like a CHARM Every Time : ))

Why do you get round holes with a cloth?
@guyantonelli54112 жыл бұрын
I worked a machinist for years, and I honestly had never seen that technique. we typically put a piece of scrap wood under the hole when drilling thin metal which also prevented it from catching the bit and spinning. This was an interesting new trick

That is a very slick and useful trick. Thanks for sharing this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJ6yg4xua5aMa7c

Better trick is to just interpolate with an endmill.
@bobjimenez44642 жыл бұрын
Great Trick......I'm going to try that one! : ) After the shop gets a decent mill vise.
@greg201520153 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the other reason this worked (in addition to it acting as a placeholder) was because the cloth is holding and preventing the cutting oil from burning up too rapidly as well..

Get rid of those quick clamps! Use more ridged bolts set up. Sharpen the drill more accurately. A mis-sharpend drill is what causes oval, octagonal, weird shaped holes. And use a lot more coolant! Cool trick I have never seen the cloth trick before.
@yamacrew2503 жыл бұрын
What also might help is to have your drill bit not hit your vise jaws 😆
@allensalazar3103 жыл бұрын
Its much better if the final diameter of hole is 13/32” so make 5/16” in first the hole then next is 13/32”think its much better than clothe

@orsonincharge48793 жыл бұрын
why does this work ?
@thunderbirdone81263 жыл бұрын
I am guessing that is about a 3/4 inch bit, it should be running 357 RPM but looks like about 60, this increases cutting pressure and chipping. The drill's web is what causes it to wobble, first drill the hole about 1/16 under, then to full size, that way the web is in the open air and has no control over cutting action.
@edwardwalker32803 жыл бұрын
Use step drill single flute.
@nanathannvw3 жыл бұрын
My dad taught me this when I was 15 or so. But we used paper shop rags. Readily available in pretty much every shop. Works well when stepping up any drill bit
@baz10863 жыл бұрын
This can also be used to stop drill shake when you are countersinking a hole It stops the chattering
@louisfernandez89243 жыл бұрын
who in their right mind would drill a hole so big with SO little supporting metal on the sides? that piece is doomed for failure

@ronslaughterandalice10184 жыл бұрын
COOL ,,,,,,, same principle as using a pair of pantie hose to center up a punch in a die. Stretch the pantie hose over the die set and leave the punch slightly lose and it will bring the punch to the center of the hole then you can tighten the punch in and dowel it.
@johnlucic66084 жыл бұрын
How about using a step bit, no need using this old trick anymore.
@garybillups18184 жыл бұрын
I call Shennigans! The first piece was crushed by the vice when it lost all integrity. The second piece was twice as long.
@nonurbusiness41574 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too. Some people will clamp the vice down so tight that as such a big drill is taking out so much material and leaving the sides with very little support, the vice pressure will then try to collapse the hole some, and so when the drill's flute comes around, the material will try to migrate into it just enough to make the cutting edge of the drill start to cut outside of what's supposed to be the hole's finished diameter
