I’ve listened to several CA-35 survivor stories and I always tear up. I’ll never have a bad day again. Ever.

If your god was real, there wouldn't have been a war, and you wouldn't have been needed to guard the bomb. Your "god" didn't spare you. You're "god" killed your friends, and you escaped with your life intact. Never attribute to any god, what you achieved on your own.

I actually met this man at Bingo in Washington State probably 8 years ago. He was wearing his USS Indianapolis hat. I asked permission to shake his hand snd he was very kind. I also asked him how he ended up in the water, he said he was on the railing of the ship as it was sinking into the oily water and he just stepped off the rail into the black sea. Incredible.

I believe God blessed this man, keeping him alive so that he could tell his story with his incredible story telling and speaking ability. No movie, no documentary, no book, could ever be as compelling as his words. My grandfather's brother served on the Indianapolis. My family's most sincere thanks and appreciation.

Sean- Not at all trying to be rude, but I really struggle with the meaning of your comment. If God- as you say, “kept him alive so he could tell his story, by fault that means he didn’t bless the others, didn’t save the others. With all due respect, how in the hell can you say something so obtuse like that? I mean, that’s like a 4 yo girl get run over by a car and people say “We’ll pray for her parents to heal and have the power to get through this?” Or, one of my favorites, “It was her time.” Like, are you fucking serious!!! Are you really gonna say that and do you really think she’s “up there” sitting next to God?” I mean, dude, if he’s that all powerful, why in THE hell would he allow that to happen in the first place!!!!!!!!” I’m becoming more and more disenchanted by religious and all its bullshitl

You know....wonderful as this guy is and as horrific an ordeal that Indianapolis crew went through, it pales in comparison to what happened to Japanese surface vessel and German U-boat crews. Hypothermia, sharks, salt water, drowning, burning, yadda yadda yadda. Imagine that except 1000x more people. I'm certainly not drawing moral equivalence, but let's just not forget the amount of suffering of those on the other side, who just happened to born on the wrong patch of dirt.

Thank you for your Service and amazing inspiration. I will ALWAYS see you as a hero, just as I see my Father, who fought in World War 2 and Korea. *SALUTE*

I saw "Jaws" in '77 when I was 9 years old. Quint's Indianapolis lines along with the movie messed me up. It's the reason why I joined the Army and never even talked to the Navy. If my tank had been hit and and disabled I could jump out and run without worrying about being eaten by a shark before hypothermia sets in. You men and women that serve or served in the Navy and Coast Guard have my utmost respect. Cheers from America.

What a traumatizing thing to experience and survive. GOD definitely watched over him and all those who were praying. To go from 80 to 17 in a matter of hours/days in terrifying. Like he said, people can claim to be atheist all they want, BUT when they are faced with death or the unimaginable they only pray to GOD ALMIGHTY. God bless his soul & all those that went through this horrifying experience.

I’ve listened to Mr. Harrell tell his story several times now, and I love this man. I could listen to him speak for hours. Never met him a day in my life, but have the utmost respect for him and all of our WW2 servicemen. I just discovered that he actually passed away in 2021. I hope he rests in paradise, along with all of our boys that fought and died for our freedom. 🇺🇸

Your written statement a 1:43 is incorrect. A distress signal WAS sent by the ship & picked up by 3 separate entities. Due to bureaucracy & precautions of war, it was ignored for almost 5 days.

I met a Survivor on a cruise ship headed to Hawaii a few years ago , he was Michael Kuryla jr. , we talked alot about just how he survived and how it all happened . He was on a 40 mm gun and told of of some attacks they had ! I would meet him in the Casino and always wished he would win big ! Not sure if he did ! Great man he was from Illnois ! I purchased the book 317 survived at Indianapolis in 2002 ,James E. O,Donnell autographed it ! Worst Naval accident in history, amazing they survived !

I was recommended to come here from someone else on the video of Quint's story from the movie Jaws. To me, that was the scariest part of Jaws. And that was my comment. Well after that recommendation I found this. And to hear his heart and soul in this story makes it all truly real to me now. I knew about the Indianapolis and what happened (not from Jaws btw I was commenting on that particular video), but I never knew true details about what they went through. To hear it from someone who was actually there.... God I pray that we as a species never have to go through such a conflict again... God bless this man and the service he gave. I know he is with you now, please, please bless this man...
