The three speed transmission is not the most important "thing" of the 1919 FUS because the three speed was available in 1915!

What i think is interesting and a bit of subtle evidence that coberates the dates is the way the red double cross has a shorter upper horizontal cross than the lower one and is the same as the older documents of the time period and the one drawn on the bike. I bet on closer examination it might have been that grey color of the tank of the bike and with the red cross on top of it .

My dad had the same bike when I was a kid. Worked hard and had parts made to get it running. Rode many times on it. So he paid 500 bucks for it in 1966. !!

I hope Harley Davidson digitizes those archives to preserve them. One big fire and all that history would be lost - or a flood, tornado, anything.

I'd rather have a Henderson over a Harley anytime.Harleys are too overhyped. There have been some decent ones but AMF really screwed the pooch on the ones they built. My uncle constantly worked on his sportster when he had it.

Why is the music put in drowning out the sound of the machine when its finally running? This story sounds like it was produced by someone that does not understand how amazing a running 1914 motorcycle itself is.

yes, after paying for the gas for that first mile, you won't be able to afford another 10 feet! but at least the Harley will look really cool sitting there at the side of the road, not running, ready for the repair shop.

Since 1992 I have had three Harley-Davidson's and none of them ever leaked oil or had any mechanical problems! They run forever and the fit and finish and the paint is the best in the industry. I still have two Sportsters, and only traded in my 2015 FLHP Police because at my age of 72 I felt that because of injuries from a car accident I did not feel strong enough to man handle the 825 lb. machine. They always start and always run and always get me home.

After all of the motorcycles at Indian provided to the Allies sank with the Lusitania Harley filled in the gap there were two shipments of Harleys in case one got torpedoed. Because Indian sent all of their production to the military starving their dealers of product to sell many of their dealers switch to selling Harley-Davidson or another brand of motorcycle.
