Naive question: if the trains used to run this route, why do they need so much testing?
@pcuser4223 күн бұрын
Electric trains are new to the Papakura to Pukekohe section; the overhead lines as well as newly installed safety equipment all needed testing. Previously, Pukekohe was served by diesel trains.

I thought if there were some good coaches at Taumarunui, they could be rebuilt for a trial provincial service, about six maybe. Then I saw the video the guy made of the interiors and they were in a bad state alright. However, if KiwiRail had any gumption, they could do just that if suitable coaches could be cleaned up. However they are so risk-adverse I doubt they would even contemplate it. The missed opportunity was when the coaches were still in Auckland after the electrification was finished, then, I think, something could have been tried.

Now start work on extending the 25kV electrification to Hamilton (or to Te Rapa which is 3 km north of Hamilton station).
@Eventer_HunterАй бұрын
maybe when all public transportation is used by one card in New Zealand, or we can switch trains at Pukekohe
@marc21091Ай бұрын
@@Eventer_Hunter Most of the line from Pukekohe to Te Rapa (the freight yard 3km north of Hamilton Frankton station) is double-track. Extension of 25kV to Hamilton would include doubling this section, a few bridges to replace level crossings on the main roads, and reopening 2-3 stations. Limited stop trains could then operate between Hamilton (reopening its under-town-centre station) and Auckland Britomart on an hourly interval. That would bring to New Zealand European standards of modern rail service. Freight operation would then be by electric haulage between Auckland and Palmerston North, and there should be an end to diesel locomotives hauling container and other freight trains 'under the wires' for hundreds of kilometres. Apparently the 25kV catenary in the Auckland region is slightly different from that installed in the 1980s between Hamilton and Palmerston North so the EF locos could not use it without modification. Better perhaps to sell them (to Queensland Rail?) and buy new electric locomotives from Europe which can operate on both 25kV AC and 1700v DC (in the Wellington region). France has had two voltages for historical reasons for decades, so is perhaps the country that builds the best dual-voltage locos.

Great journey, thank you! Did they make sure everyone was out of the viewing car through the Tawa tunnels going in/out of Wellington? I noticed they didn't mind for the Poro'o'tarao tunnel in your trip, unlike GVR who makes us go inside for safety in that tunnel. Cheers!

This is 12yrs old now have you been back..... Not sure where the first couple of stations were. I think maybe Western line Swanson which can't be right because the train stopped going to Waitakere Rd long before 2012..... The Western Line went to Helensville in the 70's and before that the service was mixed traffic from Henderson to Helensville. It would be nice to see the train going up to Helensville again. From memory there was talk about the Waitakere Tunnel not being large enough for purpose???

Took this trip November last year...Very disappointing with the overall experience. Seated in the dreaded Carriage D, isle seat with a poor young lady with the window...felt very uncomfortable for the whole trip. Seats aren't great, also had uncontrollable kids running up and down the train until the manager finally made an announcement for parents to reign them in. Glad to get off the darn thing in Wellington. Wouldn't recommend it if you travel alone and are male.

A bit tedious but necessary work, and good to see the progress. Saw the three new stations on the map in Britomart/Waitematā station the other day, "coming 2025". Something.. poignant about an old diesel locomotive pulling a newish EMU through testing. "Soon all of this will be yours".

Erm… …how on earth do you imagine they would do that? They’re going to be retired in the next 5 years and replaced with multiple units or railcars anyway.
@Kiwitrailchannel4 ай бұрын
@danieleyre8913 Well, they could just butt out the generator and diesel equipment and install new electric equipment. Should be cheaper than buying new trains
@danieleyre89134 ай бұрын
@@Kiwitrailchannel Ah erm no. These are just carriages that are towed by a locomotive. They’re not self-powered multiple units. And in any case; even if they were self-powered, while converting diesel stock to electric stock has been done with some classes of trains overseas, it’s not very common because it is usually very complicated. The carriage’s weight distribution and centre of gravity can’t change much. It’s usually just not worth it, better to buy electric stock and sell or repurpose the diesel stock.
@Kiwitrailchannel4 ай бұрын
@@danieleyre8913 fair enough, could use the carriages for spare bits. They should use the horns on Auckland's electric trains. Their horns sound annoying and awful

DC 4594 was loaned from KiwiRail if there was a locomotive shortage within the normal SA fleet, but returned to the freight pool when no longer required. It wasn't leased to ARTA/AT like the rest of the SA motive power fleet was.
