I want to find something with the aesthetics and philosophy of OSR but rules light and fast paced. Adventure, constant threat of character death, monsters everywhere, stealth better than combat but "consult two or three stats, roll a D6 and keep moving if still alive.

LOL. It has as much flexibility as the DM wants it to. The old games allowed anything the new ones do. But it was more up to the DM and many more things were changed. But seriously you could do anything in the old games that you can in the new.

Have played the first two adventures from the Starter Set with my wife and daughter. Done they have no experience with rpgs, I like the familiar setting, low danger level and simplified rules. I’m also looking forward to running adventures in the Shire based on the place descriptions in The Shire booklet, which is worth buying even for someone with no intention of ever playing an rpg.

I'm going back through oxventures on their podcast, and Luke mentioned this DM session with Johnny. Admittedly, I never watched Dice Breaker when Johnny was here, but I regret taking so long to check it out. They have a lot of really wholesome takes. I used to play DnD in high school where the rules were law and everything had to be exactly by the book. I habe been kind of afraid of approaching DMing because I figured I would have to know the manuals in and out, forwards and backwards. It wasn't until I started listening to them DM for the Oxventures that I realized the fin rapport was what I wanted. I love the goofy feel of some guys just having fun. Because of his style, I started DMing myself and having so much fun. I love story telling and I love improving. This has been a delight to me. Coming back to this video four years after it was posted: it needed to be said! Thank you Johnny for reminding me that fun is an important role in DnD. I've made many great memories.

My favorite solo RPG's are from Nerdruna games, True-D6 and Kogarashi. They're both essentially the same game rules, just one is set in traditional European fantasy, while the other is in fantasy Japan. The games have these features. They're rules light. They're cheap. They're roll under your six stats, but roll high as it is also your damage roll. They only use 1D6. Armor is a savings throw to block some damage (sort of an unofficial 7th attribute). Magic is a skill check to cast spells. They come with an Oracle and some additional rules for solo play, such as an automatic companion creature (wolf, ghost, spirit of something). Kogarashi is slightly better in that it also included a mission generation table, but that is hardly a giant barrier to solo play to not have that.

It wasn't what actions he did on his turn, it's how he said it and the body language behind it. Also, as a rules snob, I didn't like that he didn't fully resolve his Storm Rage On and Ursula trigger before draw from Air Foil. Then, he actually cheated because he put the Storm in his graveyard when it was supposed to go to the bottom of his deck because of Ursula. Don't rush your turn so much that you forget to fully resolve your abilities in the proper method. 🤓
