Leeds Central Soul club then on to the all-nighter at the peer Cleethorpes. Samantha's at Sheffield was another good one. Later the KGB etc etc my god we lived in breathed it. It was the perfect environment for a neuro divergent aka dyslexia autism ADHD a world of your own, zoned into the music, a can of talcum powder in your pocket on a dance floor without having to socialize, my god it was so good, so much so I carried on attending various nighters all days and soul nights open down the country for decades, until a life changing accident stole all that from me. It's only now that I can talk about it. my god, I miss it.

No one has mentioned the widespread use of speed that was required to keep dancing all night

One of the contributors fails to mention that the original Mod movement of the early 60’s was essentially a working class thing with the Northern Soul style coming later and embracing some of the Mod style.

the records came off the boats from america...liverpool etc. the ports supplied an illicit stream of vinyl....they played those records away from the prying eyes of the mainstream. Much less underground than rave culture. Funny what the north of the country does for the world.

Bill Brewster makes some interesting observations, but not entirely accurate. On the council estates of Wigan, Warrington, Leighh and St. Helens, as a youngster, you heard Tamla and then Northern. And then you thought....that's for me. But you had to LIVE there to understand its impact. And then after the weekend we either went back to school or back to a job in a factory. That was the culture.

Brilliant documentary , I was first introduced to Northern Soul at 17 years old in the "Out Rigger" pub in Birmingham by a girl I knew called Lisa , I heard "Billy Ocean, Love Really Hurts Without You" I said I liked the song , the DJ was selling singles so she bought it for me it was a double A side with"Red Light Spells Danger" I've been hooked even since 👍 !

Im 63..never will there be great days and nighters like this again..Nice to see the younger generation k.t.f and keeping the northern soul scene going..BUT they will never feel what "we" the older generation felt the first time around..ain't no soul like the old sole..and thats the truth.✊

for me the northern soul scene was a place where the kids who didn't fit in were welcomed with open arms. The kids who weren't good at school, the lads who were in bother all the time with the bizzies, the bad lads that the rest of society looked down on.........the "mal-adjusted", the problem kids...........that was US. And once we found NS we didn't give a flying shit what anybody else thought about us. We knew we were ok among our own but to then to have that bangin mooosic too was just heaven. I did find heaven!! Nobody bollocking me. Nobody whacking me round the head. Nobody telling me what to do. I was ME and the world worked just fine. And i fitted in. And I loved it. Everyone else was the same.............we were one big happy family and looked out for each other. Nothing will be the same again...............the rave scene followed Northern and was really good but it wasn't the same, it just tried to be. NS changed my life and very nearly took it too but I wouldn't change a thing if I could live it over again. KTF!! ❤❤❤❤❤
