this doesn't look too bad. maybe the posibility of the conttol arm slightly ground down would increase the risk of it failing, but i don't really think it was worth replacing, unless it was bent, which, from my limited undrrstanding, it didn't seem to be.
@PaulOffordRacing12 күн бұрын
I have replaced it now. I think you're right, though. It probably would have been good for years, but I just don't want to risk it. Another issue was that a chunk of the dust boot was missing, and so dirt would have gotten into the joint.
@martso928812 күн бұрын

Hiya Paul. Interesting video as ever. My tuppence....forget about modding the 116 and either plump for getting another vehicle or do some sort of car swap with someone you can trust. Storage on the second vehicle would be less than all that faff plus (importantly) your 'time cost' of switching everything around from month to month. Just pick a timeless and versatile car for roadsports which you can sell or rent out whenever youre not using it and you'll probably be better off net by the end of it all. Just an outside perspective in case youre tunnel visioning it all a bit.

The N45 is an interference engine. The valves can contact the pistons so be careful...

@@PaulOffordRacing You know what you may be right. I had a N45B16A where the chain broke or skipped a tooth and the mechanic told me that the valves were bent. Hi did you replace the oil pan bolts?
@zsiga624424 күн бұрын
My manual says 12 nm torque ( 11 13 2AZ ) for bolts not mentioning to replace. But the shop (where i bought the control valve) says that it needs to be torqued at 35nm witch seems a lot for me and i need new bolts that's why i ask you
@PaulOffordRacing23 күн бұрын
I didn't replace them. I think the manual says they should be replaced because the new bolts have impregnated thread lock. I just used a small amount of loctite thread lock.

I'm on vacation at the moment, but I think my Haynes manual says 30 Nm for the sump bolts. My sump bolts are M8 and that's important. If you have smaller sump bolts, say M6, you definitely wouldn't use 30 Nm. If I were you I'd cross check the 12 Nm figure with another source to be certain.

The N46B20 engine has Valvetronic. So it will be quite a lot of work to fit it in the 116. Unless you can lock the valves at full lift, and not use the Valvetronic at all. Might work, BMW has put the rev limiter on Valvetronic engines to 6500 as it is a bit fragile. However a n46b20 bottom and a n45 head might do the trick, and be very close to the N45b20 fitted in the 320si.

You indicate a N46B20 engine and mention the 120i. It also came in the 118i. The 120i has the more powerful engine with around 170 hp and the 118i with the same engine has around 145 hp iirc. Same engine but I think the difference is in the engine management and injector size 🧐 I run a 118i with the N46B20 engine with a header (from Russia, bought on EBAY in 2019) and a custom-built larger-diameter exhaust system with sport-cat, resonator and an Eisenmann backbox. The difference in power compared to the stock exhaust is noticeable. Your best bet in my view therefore seems to be the N46 engine with some mods. Keep us posted.

I might be wrong but I think you have not reset the self adjusting mechanism on the clutch cover
@PaulOffordRacing2 ай бұрын
I thought by rotating the adjuster (and compressing the small springs) resets the clutch. Is that not right?
@itsjustchris33062 ай бұрын
@@PaulOffordRacing I think it was supposed to be rotated the other way, as there is like a little hook, which the spring must go into
@PaulOffordRacing2 ай бұрын
I'm pretty certain it's the opposite of that. The spring apply a small amount of pressure so that as the clutch wears the adjustment plate rotates. There is another tool you can buy from Laser that holds the adjuster in the way I hold it with ghe bolt. I've also cross checked with videos by others, and I think what I have done is correct. Thanks for the interest, though - no problem with getting me to double check.

You can fit 15" wheels that are lighter and tires are cheaper. I am using BMW Style31 wheels. They just barely fit. I just grinded like 1mm of from the rod ends lower corner for extra safety. Front brakes. You can use 286mm front discs with ATE calipers- this way E36 325 front racing pads fit (good selection and cheaper prices).
@PaulOffordRacing2 ай бұрын
That's an interesting idea. I'll probably stick with the 16" x 7”J ET20 wheels that we use in the Trophy series as it will give me more options, in that I can use my Trophy tyres if I get desperate.

I think there will be a build-up of carbon deposits over time. My car was burning some oil coming in through the valve guide. Plus, an engine burns crankcase vent fumes, which I'm sure will contain some oil.
