I was so happy to hear you mention Brown Sheep Company. Nature Spun is my go to yarn, and I favor it over most all other yarns. I also enjoy working with their Cotton Fleece yarn and currently have several projects planned for some that I have recently ordered. Some years back I owned a small yarn and fiber shop and Brown Sheep yarns were my highlighted yarns. Nature Spun is what I would use most when teaching, especially beginner knitting and crochet classes. I have been using this company’s yarns for over ten years now and the excellent quality of their product and customer service has remained constant. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner and other family members and some of their employees at a fiber conference, and they are simply the nicest people that you could imagine.

Books: I like books for reference rather than patterns. The essentials of Knitting, Norah Gaughan's Cable book, Knitting Ganseys, Clara Parks books: the Knitter's Book of..., Ann Budd's books sweaters, hats, mittens; I have 2 fair isle sweater books, but haven't made any because the colors are not available; they are still gorgeous. Magazine subscription: Long Thread Media has Farm Knits (?).

I couldn't find a band called "Humans Win" that had a song called "Marie" after hearing the name in apple podcasts. It's not "Human's Win" it is Julia Christi Ann! hahaha Thank you for adding that to the youtube video notes.

Brilliant episode Anne. I have often felt guilty about owning yarn with nylon in it. I have now resolved to use it thanks to you. It's already been made and I purchased it. It's good quality so I'll make some nice things with it. It will of course ultimately end up in landfill whether I use it or not - so I'm going to steam ahead and knit with it. Thanks my lovely friend. 💛
@sunnyw41489 ай бұрын
Excellent. Thank you. The only yarns I have with nylon is what I knit for socks. I really appreciate certain companies going out of their way to provide other choices that superwash merino + nylon.

What is the name of the yarn that is the outer coat of icelandic sheep for socks?

Anne, thank you so much for making this episode. I have also been puzzled and dismayed by influencers who create an environment where it is difficult to speak honestly about the problems with synthetic fibers. I do feel cheered by the increasing numbers of knitters who cherish nonsuperwash yarn options. Your episode is a great resource for increasing those numbers, so thanks again!

I ❤ you more with each podcast. Education informs and as a lifelong educator/librarian - if it doesn’t at some point challenge your worldview or core beliefs, you’re not really learning!

Thank you so much for all of this valuable information. I have very little acrylic yarn, I will use this up on craft projects that don’t involve anything “wearable”, and not purchase any more. I started knitting again a year ago after 30 year break. Acrylic was all I knew then, now I am all about “wooley-wool” 😊

What an informative episode! Thank you for your diligence in flushing out these hidden facts. I also learned a new word... numpty! I have never heard it before, i hope it is spelled right, and i will start using it!

I remember seeing an interview on KZbin of the author of the book with the first reference. She says she made up the use of the word for Fair Isle knitting. I’ll let you know if I find it.

I so enjoyed this episode. It was fascinating. Was drinking my tea and knitting while listening. Reached down and picked up my copy of Elizabeth Zimmerman, Knitting , Without Tears , 1971 . She explains how to cut for arm holes, but does not use the steek word. Amazing how you can do research on the internet. I bought the book years ago. Thanks for all your hard work.🤗

You inspire me! Thank you so much for all you do for your listeners, all your research, knowledge and experience is such a gift. I’m thankful, too, that you stand firm against the nasty crazies out there. You are appreciated.

Grrr - life is definitely too short for nasty and I love you tied it to your academic studies (as my librarian/teacher soul) - definitely - keep the humility and kindness in our tone and comments. Your generosity and sharing of yourself deserves better and as you mentioned on your Countdown with Jana - “Don’t YUCK on someone’s YUMM” - and I take that generally as just do NOT YUCK on someone else… // YES the Madman book and the OED history - falling down the rabbit holes are what I tell my students are the best part about research and learning. ❤

I don’t know that it was Shetland in any way, but I’ve knit The Advent scarf lace patterns and I was absolutely amazed that so many different patterns of lace exist. It’s Infiniti. I adore the Shetland pieces I see, I want to knit some. I adore these pieces. I have one book and have ordered two from uk. I will save this very informational video for future reference. I’d love a KAL. I have joined two on Ravelry groups and adore the support and having others give insights & hints along the way. All of us knitting together across the globe.

Congrats on episode 100! I only found you a couple of months ago and have been eagerly playing past episodes in order (yes, i am a Virgo). I started the master knitting program back in the early 90s, restarted a couple more times, then abandoned it in late 90s when i went back to school at an advanced age! I have totally enjoyed your thoughts on the program when you started, but it does sound a bit tougher now.... i remember questions but not essays in Level one! Have a great break, i will be looking forward to future episodes!

Thank you, it was great to hear from Elizabeth again! Such a great topic and I hope to catch her upcoming talks. Would love to take her Mini Hap class if I can work it with the schedule. My dream goal is to someday make it to SWW to meet some of these fantastic people working to preserve Shetland knitting and traditions. I could spend the entire week just listening to local folks talking and relaying stories and never for one minute tire of it! You’ve inspired a love of Shetland in me Anne! I’ll call and remind you for your 100th! 😊
