My parents were neighbours and friends with the Bruce's. I was 3 years old when the tragedy occurred and have no recollection of it however I got to know Margaret, his wife, over the subsequent years and have fond memories of her (she was a diamond).

We football fans are frequently so quick to chant our hatred against our opponents but tragedies like this can bring us together all to briefly. My Grandfather was there that day and he had a tear in his eye as he spoke about it. A sad loss from a time when we bred them tough.

Callum here..... Linda Peacock was my aunt. I was just short of 9 when she was murdered. At 15, Linda was more of an older sister to me rather than my Mother's sister. I remember Linda so well. She was a beautiful, fun loving and wonderful young person. Please be assured, that despite the fact that this horrible crime was committed over half a century ago, Linda is still remembered fondly by all her remaining family. I was at her grave very recently where she lies to rest beside her older sister Jean and her father, George. Our Papa. Family members visit her regularly. Gordon Hay may have taken Linda from our world - but he has not broken the bonds of family love. Linda is as important to us today as she always was....Linda may have become part of a 'Forgotten Scotland' KZbin stream..... But, she is not forgotten by her family.... Not in the slightest.

@@Carolinel673 - Actually Sam English played for Liverpool, Queen of the South and Hartlepool United after he left Rangers. He was certainly a haunted man and was never the same again though. John Thomson's death and the aftermath for English was certainly one of the most tragic incidents in the history of Scottish football. RIP both.

There were indeed two victims on that fateful day. You can see from the film that it was a total and tragic accident. John’s bravery cost him his life. Sam English’s immediate reaction, though injured himself, shows how concerned he was. Rest in peace, both of them. 💚🇮🇪💚

As a then crew member in the 80s I met Archie Smith on a visit from Canada. I was standing in for the mechanic who was on holiday. I had a visit from a couple of divers who had recovered the ships bell from the wreck of the "Isla Magee" (?). They wanted to present the bell to the lifeboat station. I phoned the coxswain to get his opinion but it was decided it couldn't be in the boat house. I suggested that the bell go to the Signal Tower museum, nearby. Instead they took it away with them.

Commercial pilot here. Don’t know if those chaps were instrument-rated (and aircraft correspondingly equipped) but assuming so the first thing to do when lost is climb, and then “confess.” Alas , way too many pilots (to the present time) elect to scud-run and end up perishing.
