This was really helpful, thank you. Looks like it keeps the essence of the solo game, but seems like a good co-op. I would think that difficulty increases a little because of turn-based restrictions, but probably not too much. There may be a few edge cases where a player has no seeds they can move on their turn (probably rare). Is that a lost game or can they skip their turn and continue playing?

Wow! This was a great video to show off the beautiful components and all of the expansions. I've been curious about how some of them work but was too lazy to read the rules, AND videos are just great at conveying information that is otherwise more difficult for me to pick up on. So, thanks! For some reason I thought seeds on a Keeper had to be immediately placed, but it looks like the seeds can hang out on a Keeper for a while. Let me know if I'm misunderstanding that clarification. I'm wondering if all the cards (including expansions) could be done in 18 cards? 2 Keepers, 2 Gates, 3 Ravens, 11 Ancients. I'm wondering if having 11 Ancients vs 16 makes a big difference in the replay-ability / variation of setup? You've probably already been down that road of thinking, but it seems like the 18 cards could be an achievable goal. Curious anyway. Looking forward to trying all the expansions at the same time. Maybe with some Gregorian chant or mystical type music in the background.. super cool game.
@jewellgr
@jewellgr 29 күн бұрын
Yeah, you probably assumed that because in my 1st demo I seemed to immediately pickup the seeds on the Keeper right away. Not a requirement though. 18 cards could work. I started at 18 cards for the base game since that is a common threshold. The other expansion cards were just bonus developments. If at the end of the contest, I haven't expanded any further and the two expansions make sense in the core set, I would consider whittling down the Ancients to 11 to accommodate. Yeah, I’ve listened to 'Forest Fantasy Music' playlist when playing to get in mood.

Great stuff! Quick question - in the rules I have from yesterday, can you clarify the ‘skip’ button symbol and how that works?
@jewellgr
@jewellgr Ай бұрын
Yeah, it should show up at the bottom of page 1 on the rules, but basically that means “last placed seed here”. So, if you pick up seeds, place them on ancients, and the last seed placed is on a card with that symbol, it activates the related action. I plan to make another how-to-play video tonight to cover this and the new expansions. Thanks for the support!

Overall, both expansions seem intuitive and interesting. Both also happen to increase the difficulty. Did you find the base game too easy?
@jewellgr
@jewellgr Ай бұрын
Not necessarily, but I already had these ideas scoped out, so wanted to get them into players hands. One aspect I am considering changing is the full agency of picking which Keeper you place seeds on after an awakening. I still want to give the player some agency but may alter it something like "If the number of seeds is even, place them on the left Keeper. If the number is odd, place them on the right Keeper. This still gives the player agency, but requires more work on their part to achieve the desired outcome. Still a work in progress!

The tree with 7 empty spaces is fairly intuitive; that was my first guess at what it meant. The icons on the two cards on the side are somewhat less intuitive, in the sense that you are using seed shapes whereas all other instances of seeds are circles. Maybe for the one that swaps, show 2 cards with circles in them with an arrow between them. And then for the one that reverses the direction, maybe an image of an 8 card tableau instead of the 3 seeds, with the clockwise arrow around it.

Absolutely love it! Mancala as it was meant to be.. I like the idea much better as a solo game to solve vs traditional 2 player. I like the background of how you came up with the idea, and showing off the design along the way. This is incredible for only being 2 days in.. really cool. The theme is perfect and I really think the art does a good job of invoking that theme. My only feedback is that it looks great and I'm looking forward to learning more about it as you move forward.

16:00 with the hard variant you can't play any of the hearts or the 2, but the ONLY remaining cards add up to exactly 14. You could have continued with the plat and even used it as an example for the east consolation prize variation! Great game and explanation nonetheless. Thank you!

@dmytropolovynka
@dmytropolovynka Ай бұрын
This is a really great improvement on a game "Dice Shift". Thanks for the game! The rule about "consecutive" trades can be easily bypassed if there are two pairs of dice which can be consecutively played consecutively (like 4-5 and 1-2) - but this can be fixed by forcing a player to "stick" a die to the one which it was traded for. Like - if you traded 4 for 5, you keep both dice "glued" to each other, unless the die is immediately rerolled, or the next trade happens. And you can't use the "glued" die to trade with a die it is "glued" to. This way you can't trick the system and you don't have to remember which die was traded for which one. I suppose that in the original rules you can't trade same dice even if there were some trades in between.

I really like this version of Merchant Solitaire, the theme is so good and a great name :) I like to imagine that hearts are romance, spades are horror, clubs are fantasy, and diamonds are business/self-development. I'm trying to think of a reason why you'd want to give away a free book (the same genre as they are trading in) but I can't think of it -maybe to free up a space on the shelf for a different number or suit? Hard to imagine that being beneficial, but maybe in a rare case. I like the variants too. Great design! I'll be trying this very soon.
@jewellgr
@jewellgr 2 ай бұрын
Yes! At one point I had a variant called Romance Enthusiasts where ♥ gave 2 Reputation, but settled on the more universal Patrons one you see now. And I did forget to go back and mention in the video that one scenario where you may want to give away a free book is if the Customer has the same suit as the Used Book. Your offered Book may be free, but it also nets you 1 Reputation. Otherwise, yes, the Exclusive Offer rule is normally a negative effect to play around.

Why can't you print it? I originally had cards like that that severely disrupted your deck, but I got a lot of feedback from players that gameplay became too frustrating and ruined scoring objectives had worked toward. Now, the upcoming published version does introduce a new element that allows the player to dial difficulty up or down as desired. Stay tuned!

I must say that for someone who does not speak English, this is all very difficult to understand. For example, 1) what happens if we reveal the fourth stone, but the Galdors Grip card has not yet been found in the deck? Should we find her in the deck to flip? 2) Can we view the deck in our hand at any time?
@jewellgr
@jewellgr 8 ай бұрын
1) You’d simply rotate Galdor’s Grip card right away once you reveal it. An ability is never active while its card is face down in the deck. 2) Yes, as stated in the video and rules, you can view the deck at anytime!
