In a short sentence non neckbeard lore essay, the pantograph is lowered entering a neutral zone (to keep the neutral zone and the train neutral) and changed after exiting a neutral zone to a different position by a knob in the cab and only after the last coach exits the neutral zone may this be done. This is but one of multiple zones where this must be done.

Cross Country 221s don't tilt anymore. Trains can't tilt where this is filmed either, because the tracks aren't fitted with tilt sensors which tell the train when to tilt and how much tilt is required.
@gjbtube2 жыл бұрын
Fair enough, the video was taken so long ago I could have been mistaken for not understanding the camber of the track on the curve instead of a tilting mechanism on the train.

OK folks, let's put this one to bed. The contact wire in the tunnel is much higher than on "normal" track. To ensure proper contact the pantograph has to be re-configured or it trips the over-height protector. This involves dropping then raising the pantograph. It's not - as someone has suggested - done with a push of a button but with a turn of a rotary switch. Someone else has commented that it looks dangerous. It's not. In a neutral section a circuit breaker - triggered by lineside magnets - opens and closes circuit breakers to ensure that current is not passed from one section to another. Yes, the Eurostar class 373s did used to run on the Southern Region third rail system but when HS1 was opened the relevant equipment was removed. The current was not collected by brushes as someone has mentioned but "shoes". Another pantograph is fitted to enable the trains to run on the French 1,500v and Belgian 3,000 v system. Basically, the Eurostar class 373 is a U.K.loading gauge triple current T.G.V. They're all being withdrawn because basically they're knackered.

Thanks for the summary. And you’re quite right. 20 years is the average life expectancy for a high speed train in any case.
@BusTrainsGuy203 жыл бұрын
To be honest there such amazing high speed trains, just by the speed and the sound they make when passing at high speed, the Class 373's are my favourite but the 374's don't make none of that but there quick at acceleration and braking, but it will be sad to see the Class 373's go.

There's a video from the British railway musem... can't recall now, but in it, the guide discusses and demonstrates the eurostars rotary switch. It has more than five settings!
