POLITICS forced the “early retirement” of Bjorn Rune Borg: The Grand GOAT. Youngest player in history to win 11 grand slams. Highest grand slam win %. Only player in history to win the “channel slam” 3 years in a row (Wimbledon & the French Open, 1978-79-80). Only player to fuse these THREE diverse sports into tennis: Ping Pong/forehand; Hockey slap shot/backhand; Skating/Quicksilver movement on the court. Resting pulse rate of 38 bpm when young. Unshakable resolve and ability to reach and hold the Alpha relaxed concentration brainwave state. Although burnout did play a key part in his much-needed 6 month break from tennis in late 1981 into spring 1982, the REAL reason he “retired early” was DIRTY POLITICS: Borg was forced out of the sport by the “players council” in 1982, which, because Borg had missed the first four months of tournaments in 1982 to recharge and get his energy and passion back, they refused Borg’s request to play a reduced schedule in ‘82 (due to his having rested the first third of that year) and instead insisted that he play a full 12 month schedule of tournaments in the remaining 8 months of that year-or they’d force him to QUALIFY for the same grand slam tournaments he’d either won or was a finalist in just the year before (1981). Borg refused to play under those draconian conditions-and THIS is the true and seldom told story of how dirty politics cut short the stellar career of Bjorn Borg.

I don't think he is right about young people winning later today. It is primarily because of Federer, Djoko and Nadal who have made it difficult for the young to win Grad Slam. Now one is left if Nadal is no successful in his come back. Once he is gone, I think it will open up chances for the younger guys again.

The reason why I took up tennis. Ice man Borg. Also the best example of how to behave on court. If only I could stop cursing at myself when I make errors..but then I think of Borg and I calm down. After all..its only tennis.

With his huge legend name and status, seems good tennis parent, keep a good boundaries, clear role as parent, not controlling and respect Leo & team as individual, best wish to family Borgs. Finally guess most of us tennis players or watchers should be grateful, we can indulge in tennis, because one guess most of us are from stable part of the world, remember many wont have the choice, food & living or stay alive 1st.

The gentleman Mr Borg is a person whom I saw as the lead to be my best at that time I saw and began tennis to my sport of choice if i had autonomy to choose. The hunger then an addition of foods and the way hydration reacts with diet is the way to settle to a persons choice. for me it may be to be better player but another to win and another to think better and conqueror who she / he is internally and perhaps decide from there . at nearly 60 years I like me not to be a person that says here it is eat that but after this time i say hmmm i found i commited and at that time it is a good answer but the the last set comitmnet was not an answer that i needed. perhaps tennis is my way of lif/e interpretation , learning, and at 60 i hope to continue to equalise my mind and be adapataple and a tr=eam player , relationships? easir when the femine has respect in my mind

His son may not be able to do anything like the father... it just does not work like that... and i think it is high time professional sports stops... it is creating too much of toxic fan base.. constant bad blood and unnecessary journalism... and over-the-top hero worship - of people who hardly deserve it... creating all sorts of wrong examples in life...after showbiz celebrities...all useless...

I was a huge fan of Borg in the 70's and loved seeing him win all those slams. He was mister cool to me! Sad he felt he had to step aside at such a young age but some achievements he pulled off and great to see him involved still and achieving great things with Laver cup. Such an icon !

Borg. The first tennis rock star. The iceman. The enigma. The ice to Mac’s fire. Today it’s all about tennis robots. Back then it was personalities. The top guys today all play the same way. It’s not so interesting.

I loved watching Bjorn play. The matches with McEnroe were classic games. I am the same age and I had the same Fila tennis shirts when he played. He did retired very young. I bet if there were sports psychologist and if he had a bit more privacy he would had played into his 30’s. Bjorn’s era had more rallies like in today’s woman’s tennis because of the wood rackets and the early metal rackets the men used and it was more interesting to watch. Todays tennis is just faster with shorter rallies.
