Fantastic channel. I think that this is pretty difficult to knit. I shall have to take time to work it out before attempting it. I also see that the wool is a double knit. I am South African so our knitting terminology is the same as yours. Yours is absolutely beautiful

Thanks for posting. I’m curious about the knitted garments worn by woman involved in the herring industry. Many of them appear to wear a similar dark wool ribbed knitted bodice. Are there any in the collection that I can see or any information about these knitted garments.
@scotfishmuseum Жыл бұрын
Hi Lily, thanks for your question. We don't have any of these specific garments in our collection but a good source of information would be Liz Lovick, a knitter based in Orkney. Her pattern developed from a women's gansey is at www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jesss-gansey and her own website is northernlace.co.uk/

Pity about the driech tuneless modern music. A good Scottish dance band would have been far more appropriate.

I suggest you might want to read the books by Beth Brown Reinsel about the Gansey. She went to the villages and interviewed the knitters of gansey.

Hi Margaret, thanks for the suggestion - we were lucky enough to meet Beth when she was last in Scotland and she kindly donated her gansey book to our museum library.

A Great Friend & a neighbour to the Elizmor ,Simon Jack
@Robescocia3 жыл бұрын
@@margaretunderwood8897 Hi Margaret, your comment intrigued me. Not sure how you made the connection with the above video and the Elizmor but delighted to hear it nevertheless. Simon Jack was a great friend of my dad as was his brother Bobby. About 1955 Simon waded into Girvan harbour (albeit at low tide) and lifted me off the deck of the Elizmor and carried me to the beach near Nobles boatyard. Simon being very tall managed it without getting wet. I have an old black and white photograph of my dad and Simon and another fisherman on board the Elizmor. Are you connected to Simon? I always found all the Jacks in Girvan to be great people.
