Two things make a song good. Seven things make a song great. Firstly, a song must have a poetic and rhythmically enticing flow of words, depending on the language, the "More == Less" rule applies especially well to forcing more words to fill a lyrical and rhythmic flow of the baseline, rather than a single word with the perfect amount of syllables to stretch and fit the flow, emphatically. To include a simple example: "The horizon's fading out and drifting away" is a string of simple words, but it has a strong and poetic meaning, which words in sequence to the rest of the song. This narrative structure formally begins the entire song on a strong note, depicting a positive thing, a horizon, becoming progressively less visible and reachable. "And the blue sky can no longer foretell the approach of a new day" is the runner-up with a fitting absence of clarification on whether it's directly referencing the actual sky, or the water atop. Yet, it implies that, as one sinks lower and lower, you receive less light and the 'sky' you see is no longer a reliable judgement of time. in both cases, both interpretive skies have become useless navigators. "Looking around, I see people so still that they can't even breathe....." Is still an extremely basic string of words that, used as simply as they are, the redundancy is less of a diminishing factor and more of an enhancer of the poetry. Others aren't moving because they're not breathing, which is ironic. They probably feel the weight of the water and are literally unable to use their muscles to breathe, even if they hypothetically could. "... But, as I stood here watching, the same thing has happened to me." is a powerful, grim phrase that, if vocalized emphatically, sounds like a plea for help, and otherwise, sounds like an ironic acknowledgement. 'Hey, these people look like they're in danger. Oh...' And the rhymes continue with the following lines "Sadness fills my heart, as I start to fall," which is panic. "Maybe it'd be better to leave it all--" Which is acceptance of the danger and contemplative complicity. 'Maybe' it would. "But if I do, then I lose my chance to be in front." Is a line of naivety and hope in spite of everyone else's shortcomings, to be better than everyone else's shortcomings, to do what nobody before has, and accomplish was nobody else will. After only three negative lines of lyrical plot, the protagonist decides to challenge the situation. The rest of the song is still a sequence of short lines, each insisting on faith, clinging onto an idea, a need to survive, before quickly extinguishing the notion of escape. "Living in this darkness, I'll never get higher," aware that they're like everyone else "Just like a drowning, powerless diver." "I know that when I find a way to breath, happiness will replace the despair in my cold heart, and then I'll never drown again." The last major phrase, accepting they cannot breathe, rather than fight the pressure of their situation and waste their time, the song is left with an open-ended situation where the diver is hoping to be saved, but they possibly died. If someone rescues them, they're happy, however, if they drowned, they will, likewise, never drown again. What makes a song good is not how strong the words are. It's not how strong the organization of words is. A good song can have the best phrases and best ideas, but tell no story. Some songs tell a great story with sluggish and boorish wording, with forgettable phrases and horrible pitch and flow. A 'great' song, to put it simply: Has important phrases, not just individual words, that string together so well that they form their own allegories, within the allegory of the song as a whole. "The horizon is drifting out and fading away; The blue sky can no longer foretell the approach of a new day." A past and a present, I saw the light, and I lost it. Manages to tell its story in as few words as possible, retaining its point, but still telling a fuller story within the flow of a song. Involves implicit consequence and explicit reality. Challenges philosophical and poetic ideas and dualities. "Sadness fills my heart, as I start to fall; Maybe it'd be better to leave it all." > "If I do, I'll lose my chance to be in front." An optimistic duality of surrender and none-surrender. To give up, or not. Correctly acknowledges its allegory by implying an opposite situation. "People so still that that can't even breathe" > "Your smile" Elicits an emotional feeling at least three times; 1. "The light is fading; I cannot see the light." 2. "People are dying; I am one of those people." 3. "Your smile is a reason to live; I choose to live." Leaves the listener with a crucial lesson.

With your cover, I finally understand what this song is all about. As the final theme song of Naruto Shippuden, it was meant to be serve as a send off to the series as a whole. The lyrics about falling into darkness with the narrator of the song promises to never give up on the person falling call to mind Naruto's bond with Sasuke, one of the biggest story elements of the manga/anime and how Naruto never gives up on his friend no matter how far he went along his dark path. It also fits with the final episodes of the series so well, as now Naruto has managed to reach through to Sasuke, and other characters such as Shikamaru are facing their temptations to succumb to darkness. Also the lyrics "And I could swear I hear your voice back from our younger days" are perfect to include in the opening of the series, because the harken back to the very beginning, when Naruto forged a bond he would always strive to protect. Overall, great cover. Hearing this lyrics helped me better understand the themes of the song much better.
