Nice find! It looks so much like War Mongrels 1.5 I'm kind of shocked they used an entirely different title. On one hand, I really don't need another story like War Mongrels, and especially not another Destructive Creations' game featuring Warsaw Uprising. On the other hand, War Mongrels was buggy yet competent design-wise, so I hope they will make some improvements / innovations. So yeah, obviously I'm going to play it on day one, and possibly suffer for it. xD

I low key mention it in the honorable mentions section. Indeed, it has a lot of similarities with Commandos! A very interesting gameplay conceit too. I didn't actually enjoy playing it though... But that's just down to my personal taste, it doesn't seem like a bad game at all.

I think Commandos 2 has aged worse than the original. Instead of interesting gameplay challenges or refining the stealth mechanics, they simply added a bunch of stuff without giving it much thought. The interior of the buildings sometimes gives you more interesting scenarios, but the flawed camera and controls are more evident in those cramped spaces, and ultimately it just makes the game tedious, with the Colditz mission being the worst example. So much effort wasted on pointless filler, like modelling the entire Eiffel tower and doing nothing with it. It's funny how, even with all the things the added into the game, the best addition to the genre (the simultaneous actions) had to come from another developer.
@waskerton
@waskerton Ай бұрын
As much as I love Commandos 2, I can see your point. This game is, indeed, a mess. That said, I don't think age is its problem. It was a mess when it released, and it is a mess now. Commandos 1, however, lost some of its appeal by being outclassed by games like Desperados, Shadow Tactics, etc. That's my take on this. I still love both Commandos 1 and 2 though.
@gurriato
@gurriato Ай бұрын
@@waskerton I don't consider the original a better game necessarily, it's just that being more simplistic and a pioneer gives it a certain retro appeal compared to the sequels. About the age not being the problem, I actually agree, because I'm old enough to have been there at release and I gave up on Commandos 2 at the time. I remember thinking it was "too complex" compared to Beyond the Call of Duty, which I loved. Still, I mostly blamed myself and all this time I kept assuming it was a masterpiece, until last year, when I finally bit the bullet and played through the entire game. Realizing that it wasn't the brilliantly complex game I imagined as a child but a poorly directed mess of ideas was a bit disappointing to say the least. At times it really looks like they wanted to make more of an all-encompassing action game, with all those explosives, flamethrowers, grenades, recruitable soldiers, loads and loads of health pickups, etc., but it doesn't really work that well in the framework they built. I was really perplexed at the time when they released Strike Force, but after really playing through Commandos 2 it makes a lot more sense. It's a shame that they didn't lean more into the direction of Hitman, which came out around that time as well. Having more unique interactions with the spy characters would have been a great addition, instead of limiting it to small glimpses like poisoning the crate of wine in the first mission or a couple of switches that release steam in the ship and in the last mission (that I only discovered after eliminating the enemies normally).

Hey, I'm that one guy from Czech Republic that at least knows about Korea: Forgotten conflict, but I must be upfront right away. The only thing I know about this game is that it wasn't great and me and my dad played it once by accident. My dad was a HUGE fan of the original Commandos Behind Enemy Lines and Commandos Beyond the Call of Duty. When I was sick and he was home with me to take care of me, he used to play and I was laying down on the couch watching him play. When he bought Commandos 2 we both did a somewhat of a competetion who'll beat it first with ALL the bonus mission medals... maaan good times, but when we were about to get Commandos 3, let's just say my dad wasn't exactly happy to ... BUY ... every single game :^) To be honest back in the day, most of the games were impossible to get here, as long as the game didn't have an OFFICIAL Czech translation, getting your hands on a copy was quite the hard task so many people who know how to burn CDs ran these "small businesses" of selling games/music CDs and to this day I have TONS of these CDs ... well they are at my parent's house, but we all have 'em. And when he heard from his friend that he knows a guy that knows a guy that's sellin' burned CDs of Commandos 3? My dad just have him the money and one week later we had that CD home, both ready the play the shit outta that game, but it was the aforementioned ... well, garbage. At the time we knew like "Hi, yes, no, goodbye and please" and even movies used to change names between episodes so we thought they might've just changed the name completely to something else :^) But I digress, the intro of the game if I remember was straight ripoff of the Commandos 2 intro, with the real life footage, but for some reason I remember it looked like those old FMV Command & Conquer type of shite. We both played the first mission and we for the love of god couldn't kill the first guard. Every time we tried to knife him, our character would get stuck and just wouldn't follow him over to the next vagon. The next thing I remember is my dad somewhat pissed off he payed for such bullshit :^) Later that day we had an icecream since he said He'd rather die from his Diabetes problems than play any of that game. It's 100% among the ton of other CDs so when I'll stop by and maybe remember, I'll try to pick it up and ran it on either virtual machine or I'm willing to bet one of our old PCs are still gonna be kept in the basement somewhere :^) Off topic: We used to play Might and Magic 6, 7 and 8 as a whole family. My parents, my brother and sister and me all had dedicated save spots, we all had turns and collectively clawed our way towards the end of each game. My dad always had this issue of finding his way around the world, since he never remembered which location leads to another. So my mom drew a huge map of all the locations how they are connected and on each page was a huge map of each location with all the buildings, dungeons... all the houses had text if there's a teacher and if they are either an expert, master or grandmaster. Which potion color do what, combinations of potions to create white and black potions. All the quest guides where certain quest items are kept and so on... We even used to play god damn Quake on LAN to decide who's gonna clean the dishes ... I fucking love my family for real My family FOR SURE ain't perfect, but man these memories of playing all those games together or against each other... Age of Empires 1 & 2, Starcraft, Quake and Quake 3 Arena, Contra, Battle City on NES (well, polish bootleg of famicom console called "Micro Genius IQ 502" also known as PEGASUS in Poland and in Russia it was called "Dendi" if I'm not mistaken) I seriously consider my childhood perfect. Always bruised up from playing outside through out the day and in the evening we used to play on PC or NES ... what else would child need innit?

As somebody who also has Shadow Tactics as their favorite game in the genre, here are my two cents on the main reasons why it's better than Desperados 3. The first is level design. I recall ST's levels feeling a lot more distinct and varied, whereas the ones in D3 tend to blur together to some extent in my mind. The second, and more important, is character balance, which is off in D3. Hector, for example, kind of overperforms as essentially a merging of Yuki and Mugen from ST. I can't exactly diagnose him with Green Beret Syndrome, but he's trending in that direction. Meanwhile, the disguise character has been nerfed heavily, to the point where that's practically the only thing she's good at. Mimimi actually has a GDC talk that I'd recommend checking out if you haven't already, and they bring this up as precisely what you want to avoid in the genre. Then there's the voodoo lady, who I remember being more of a cheat code used to get past tricky situations than an actual party member with strengths and weaknesses. There are also some other things, like the superior story and characters of ST or Edo Japan simply being a much stronger setting for this kind of game, but those are more subjective so I wanted to focus mostly on the gameplay with this comment.
@waskerton
@waskerton Ай бұрын
I think you have a point, I remember levels in Shadow Tactics being a bit more distinct than D3. However, I personally loved the voodoo lady, I thought she encouraged some really fun experimentation, and her magic-link skill worked pretty well in combination with other characters' skills. Now, considering that you weren't that fond of her, I'm curious what you'd think of characters in Shadow Gambit. There are nine of them, but I felt like the combo of Scottish Skeleton Man and Talkative High Society Spy was incredibly overpowered. The game went to some lengths to ecourage variation, but I still think this power couple had a major case of Green Beret Syndrome. :)
@TheD3rp2
@TheD3rp2 Ай бұрын
@@waskerton I haven't actually played Shadow Gambit yet. Part of it is that I have a lot of other things in my backlog, but the setting also just doesn't appeal to me personally. I like pirates, and I'm fine when they (or other nautical tales, for that matter) have supernatural elements, but when the split is 50-50 I find it ruins a lot of the appeal of the pirate half. I also don't think Mimimi's art style works for it, either. Character portraits are a good example. The ones in Shadow Tactics are pretty much perfect for a jidaigeki. They're realistically proportioned, but stylized like paintings and make heavy use of different shades of whatever color is associated with the character. They sorta work for Desperados, even though they lack the grime you'd expect from a Western. In a supernatural pirate fantasy that doesn't seem to expect you to take it too seriously, though, they just look completely out of place. I may try it out at some point down the line, but as someone who cares a lot about art direction and aesthetic in games it's kind of hard to get excited for one that does nothing for me in that department.
@waskerton
@waskerton Ай бұрын
@@TheD3rp2 I can see your point! My biggest gripe with Shadow Gambit's art style is that characters look like pirate cosplayers more than actual believable pirates. I warmed up to the game a little bit as I played because it's intentionally goofy, but yeah.

What politics were in Partisans 1941? Is it "political" to acknowledge that the Soviets fought the Nazis in WWII?
@waskerton
@waskerton 2 ай бұрын
Well, Partisans 1941 presents Soviets as the non-disputable good guys and sweeps Stalin under the rug, which I thought is pretty obviously a political statement? Are you genuinely asking what politics this game has, or do you just disagree with my feelings about them?
@mzk275
@mzk275 2 ай бұрын
The magic of the Nazis in storytelling about World War 2 is that anyone who fought them gets to be the good guy in the story. Would you say that every depiction of Americans in World War 2 sweeps American segregation under the rug? Should every WWII story about Americans be obligated to also depict the ferocious racism of American society at the time? No, that would be silly. I don't recall any part of Partisans that promoted communist ideology; it simply featured Russian speaking protagonists at a time when they were killing Nazis, which, lucky for them, is now considered good. Additionally, as I recall, The game takes place inside of the Soviet Union, so you couldn't even say that it's glossing over Soviet imperialism. IDK, dude, it seems like a stretch to call it Russian propaganda just because it features Soviets. The Nazis did actually invade the Soviet Union; Soviet partisans did actually fight them. That's not controversial.
@waskerton
@waskerton 2 ай бұрын
@@mzk275 Lack of nuance is the deciding factor for me. Consider this: Call of Duty paints US army as the unquestioned heroes, and is often considered a great tool to enlist gamers to the military. I'd say that's obviously propaganda. In the same sense, Partisans 1941 asks you to view Russian partisans as the good guys... who are on good terms with the Moscow government, and are happy to receive medals from the Soviet state. So the overall message you get is "Russia good". I'd say that's propaganda alright. To give an opposite example, the movie "Kelly's Heroes" does not mention American racism, but it does portray US army as sometimes incompetent, unmotivated, and selfish; the heroes of this story are a bunch of guys who can't take the absurd of the war anymore. This is not propaganda. Now, propaganda is good if you agree with it, and bad if you disagree, and neutral if you don't care. I'm of the opinion that Russian army does not deserve, at this point in time, to be represented as cool and heroic. As far as I'm concerned, they don't get to re-live the great heroic deeds of the WWII partisans until they stop dropping bombs on my neighbors. Now, if the ongoing war does not spoil your enjoyment of this particular game, believe me - I understand. I'm as cynical as the next guy, I just happen to live in Eastern Europe and I have personal stakes in all this mess. :D

As a commandos fan myself having played them back at release (Ye I'm that old) and later bying them again on steam I have always felt the glaring missing element: When the guards walk their patrol and knows that their buddies does the same for that shift and have seen John Doe walk the same path for an hour and then he is suddently not there anymore and you don't react or care if he has been missing for the last 20 min.. I know it is a layer of complexity the developers were probably not wanting to take on but I think it would make sense if the guards change their patterns based on missing members of their team - walk to the missing guards point of route origin if they haven't been seen for 5 min. Although if it is one of the longer missions that will make the whole mission much much harder. if that triggers the alarm; It doesn't have to though it could just be that a guard more is summoned from the guardhouse if you haven't blown that up within those 5-10 min or that the guard patterns are now changed so that all the areas of the base is covered. It felt unrealistic that a base commander and all their soldiers didn't care for half an hour that the main gate wasn't attended anymore... But it is one of my favorite games but not as good as the BG series though :)

Loved the video, broseph! Been searching for more Commando-like games recently. I have to make a suggestion to add to this list. Aliens: Dark Descent meets all your commandoments! Isometric perspective? Check. 2. Each character in the squad has different abilities. Check. Their abilities are all equally useful depending on the situation as well. 3. Emphasis on stealth? Check. You may not think so given the trailers. However, the more combat you get into, the more the hive is alerted, which means the harder the mission becomes until it's untenable. If you don't practice stealth, you will not win. 4. Enemy Vision cones? Check. Unless you're being pedantic. No cones, but vision circles and lines informing you that enemy doesn't see you, is about to see you or has found you. 5. Save scumming as an intentional design. Absolutely. Even in the first mission, there's a boss fight that if you just walk in without a plan, you will be decimated. There's no warning, and there are other times the game will just take a massive dump on you. You just have to ration your saves, however, since it follows a risk vs. reward playstyle. As someone who grew up playing the Commandos games, I would say that A:DD absolutely belongs on this list. 10/10 it's my favorite game of 2023.

Really surprised you haven't mentioned Satellite Reign from former developers of Syndicate franchise

To add to the problems Robin Hood had, there's one quite egregious I have to mention : There are so many playable characters, that their 'main' abilities are 'diluted' to ridiculous levels and reduced to a measly set of three or something almost just as small. For instance, one character can only shoot a bow or swing a sword, while another can only tie up enemies or swing a sword, while another can only punch enemies or throw a net or swing a sword, while another can only carry bodies or shoot a bow, .... etc ... To summarize : characters are so limited that you need to bring as many as you can on every mission and keep them as close as possible, just so you can perform a very basic set of actions that are supposed to complement each other. For instance, you will probably need one character to lure an enemy into a trap, another character to punch him out, another character to tie him up and yet another character to carry him to a secure location that is out of sight. In so many other Commandos-likes, that could have been done with just one or two characters.

Yep, having to always bring a couple dudes who know how to tie a rope (but not much more than that) is painful. I really couldn't bring myself to attempt a pacifist no-kill run for this reason. It'd be much better if every character could take care of the knocked out enemies.

Clown. Where's Fallout Tactics? Stop making claims you can't backup. Where's Shadow run, where's shogun? where's hard west?

Every game u mentioned is a turn based game with no focus on stealth. None of these have to do with real time.

Clown ? Commandos-likes are REAL TIME TACTICS - not TURN BASED COMBAT. Even if those games are very good (especially Hard West, in my opinion), it's not the same as Commandos, where you have to act in real time and favor stealth above all.
