From my point of view, the two biggest failings of the 250 design are the despicable luggage space and the towbar design. The vehicle itself is very good looking and certainly seems to be very capable and it does hold a lot of appeal. The USA/Australian/Japan towbar design (especially the ugly bulging cover) is still far better than the European design which looks as if it has a lean-to shed on the bumper when it is covered. What the hell were Toyota thinking?!!

What dealer did you talk to mate... they lied. As an ex accessory fitter for Toyota it is not uncommon (especially in 300 series) for customers to buy accessories separately to avoid luxury car taxes. The only issue you will have is the accessory warranty if not fitted by a certified Toyota accessory fitter or technician.

Has Toyota forgotten that there are other vehicles around that can tow just as well? Stuff toyota! I drive something much better and don't get dictated to by the dealer. In WA they think they a rule unto themselves. Had hassles in the past.

A very poorly designed car from Toyota! It looks like a home made conversion NOT a factory engineered solution that should have been fully integrated into the body unit not stuck in the load area on the floor. That battery is tiny given all the hype over the hybrid system

A 4WD car in that price range should have a factory fitted towbar as standard like on every Ford Ranger XLT.

That cover you took off explains the 60kg weight limit thats been spread around about the boot. Surely would have to be the brains of the battery and not the battery itself you were looking at. Considering the batteries in hybrids have moved on from NiMH to Li-ion, Dunno why it would be labelled Lead. Maybe its part of the voltage regulator or bcdc (would have to be bigger than the typical 40amp unit) charger built into the BMS since the hybrid is a 48v system? Good video, clearly and simply done so everybody can follow it. Definitely answers a lot of headaches people had seeing these come out. Would have been tempted to take one for a test drive, but cant believe Difflock only available in Altitude Model. Would have thought GXL and above should get rear diff lock, and Altitude could have got front and rear. (Why would people want twin locked? because IFS, then it will just walk up just about everything.) All that money for a VX or Kakadu, and no diff lock?????????

The Land Rover Discovery D5 has been using a 48 volt system for nearly 4 years now and the rear floor is flat, even with the third row of seats tucked into the floor. It also has the spare under the rear of the car just like the Prado and yet has a lot more clearance. How the hell could LR do it so right yet Toyota make such a mess of it? Not only that but they managed to increase the weight of the car by 200kg.

False floors have a 7 seat delete will be the first thing I do when I get my gxl!

Nicely done. I've said this elsewhere and I'll say it here too just to annoy people. If toyota kept the spare wheel on the back, it would have allowed the 48v system to be recessed below floor level as well as accommodating for a larger fuel capacity. It's pretty ordinary that people have to undo the problems toyota have created, similar to the 70 series. If you get a chance, check out how land rover installed the 48v system in the new defender as it's executed far better.

How is that hitch receiver fitted to the chassis? Can’t see if it’s welded or bolted. Also, what’s the hole for? Is there a tow-ball camera in there?

I like the way you have the electrical connector so it can be hidden when the towbar is removed and the cover is refitted, the Toyota bracket is hideous.

Sounds like your issue is with Toyota WA (Perron Group) rather than Toyota Australia. Seems there is no such restriction in the eastern states.

I don't know how different the mounting bracket is however you could try Lexus. The GX550 is a very similar car (apart from the obvious, the engine) and they had plenty of stock a month or so ago. I will see if I can track down a part number for you. Installation is very straight forward, drop the spare wheel, mount the plug to the bracket, mount the bracket to the car, plug in the cables, push in the cable retainers, put spare wheel away, and you are done bar the testing.

Not our experience at all from our Shepparton Toyota dealer. We purchased 12 pin wiring harness, brake controller separately and a tow bar blanking insert.

There is no brake controller included. You can Install one without running any wires to the rear. Plug and play driver side that's why you have that blue wire on the plug which runs to driver side + wire for brake light with diode included if you get PZQ8560B16 harness.
