Back in my newbie days as a humble mage in Ragnarok Online around summer 2004, I ventured into the dreaded Ant Hell with dreams of farming a Vitata Card. Blissfully unaware of the abysmal drop rates, I charged into the map full of hope. Near the entrance, I noticed two players-a wizard and a priest-sitting by the teleporter. The wizard spoke in public chat: Wizard: “Dude, I’ve been farming these damned Vitatas for two weeks. Last night, I had a literal nightmare about them. I think I'm going crazy.” I shrugged it off. No big deal, right? Surely my luck would be better. I began kiting a Vitata, casting a low level fire bolt-a bit awkwardly, not one-shotting the monster, since I hadn’t exclusively leveled INT. The wizard turned to me, using the laughing emote: Wizard: “Good luck, bro.” After a hard-fought battle, I finally defeated my first Vitata. Feeling accomplished, I sat down to regenerate my SP. Then, as if summoned by fate, another Vitata spawned right next to me. I stood up, ready for Round 2. Ten seconds later… THUNK. Card drop. I froze. For two whole seconds, I just stared at it, panic rising as a nearby Andre eyed the loot like it was a buffet. I snatched it up just in time. Priest: “LMAO.” The wizard? He sat there, stunned. Motionless. Finally, he managed: Wizard: “…” Then, in silent defeat, he logged off. The priest walked over to me, using the laughing emote: “Congratulations! :D” He opened a portal, waved, and disappeared, leaving me alone with my sheer dumb luck. When I shared the story with my guild shortly after, them explaining the low drop rates to me, they crowned me with a new, graceful title just for myself: "Luckynoob" I will cherish this memory forever.

Most fitting theme when you are having a lunch with your parents in law for the first time.

This game was so incredible. All classes were balanced but maintained unique identities. No two jobs were the same, they all fulfilled different functions and niches. For example, I haven't played any game since that allowed me feel what it's really like to be a (fantasy) Priest. Elemental damage actually meant something in this game. Priests and crusaders were the best against undead. In current MMOs like ff14, elements are fake. Holy, Fire, Dark, Ice, they're all the same. There are no encounters, bosses or mobs that take more damage from Holy. It's also balance, but the wrong kind of balance, that robs jobs of their identity for the sake of homogeneity. It's a real shame. I'll never forget feeling valuable and sought after because of being a priest. Any dungeon with the undead was my domain. All the new players asked me for buffs and I was happy to give them. Being a healer in other games is just not the same.
