Yes, string theory is not physics because strings are "made of nothing". Only if strings were replaced by dimensions of quantities "Length" and "Time" could one speak of a real physical theory. I have a question: Will extra dimensions be real if they are "built" as mathematical dimensions?

String Theory is based on Jean d'Alembert's concept of an extended cartesian space. General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics are both based on Euclidean Geomertry. Cartesian geometry is, specifically, a graphing logic based on Euclidean Geometry and numerical data representation. The problem with cartesian geometry is that we "impose" a structure for the universe prior to performing measurements. However, in Euclidean Geometry, no such pre-existing space is ever defined. Euclidean Geometry is purely measurement-driven operations derived directly from the real people working throughout the world building houses, constructing foundations, making pottery, composing art. These are trades, and the people who worked in these trades gradually began to recognize special relationships and documented these relationships. All that knowledge was assembled into one place and given to a philosopher. Euclid. Euclidean Geometry is the raw extraction of the properties of measuring physical things. Euclidean Geometry is Physics, in its purest form. Cartesian geometry is "graphing" logic, and only that. In ordinary cartesian space, you can apply Euclidean Geometry just fine. But the moment to start manipulating the background environment, which is what happened when Jean d'Alembert started wondering about 4-dimensional spaces, you'll get the path of String Theory. A concept that is purely driven by mathematics, and not observation. It is a compound game of "telephone" across a 400-year span of time.

Penrose doesn't like the extra dimensions (I suppose like people didn't like curved space-time at first, either). But he finally hit on string theory's real problem - the lack of experimental data. That is the Achille's heel of string theory.

this has alway been my main gripe with string theory. How come you are taking a theory about the real world which can neither be tested and only works in higher dimension which are not true.

Thank you so much Dr. Penrose for seeing physics for what it really is: a science: based on observation and predictions.

What a shame about current world !!! People who have no clue how rigorous , how extensive and how mind killing the mathematical physics is , are making comments here and fun on one of the most revered minds , superficially contemplating his depth. Half knowledge or part knowledge always leads to darkness and destruction . May be this is the reason 99% of the people suffer from Mental Wellbeing problems without doing anything productive for human consciousness , because they have not learnt the beauty of respect and purity which are analogous and commutative too. May the Truth come upon everyone . Best from Cambridge , MA. 😢😢😢

The exact same speech was delivered by Cardinal Bellarmine regarding Galileo's geokineticism, for the exact same reasons: not experimentally testable, logical arguments are sufficiently convincing. Stellar parallax required much more advanced telescopes to measure. You have to have a healthy ecosystem of mathematically valid hypothetical models that await measurability, which is always constrained by technology, which develops by means of this kind of hypothesizing and testing, repeatedly, as a growing feedback loop. All science can say about something like string theory is: let's wait for evidence, one way or another. It's not a matter of taking something seriously before experimental validation. Physics is not, never was, and cannot, operate independently. All calculable facts are a spectrum ranging from the abstract to the measurable. There is no clear cut line.

As long as we don't have the means to falsify string theory, it isn't a theory, but a hypothesis.

Vulgar empiricist dogma and nothing more. The universe doesn’t care whether we are technologically capable of testing a theory or not. Theory X is either true or false no matter whether we have the capacity to test it or not.

The whole string theory idea is designed to make classical gravity a gauge theory, I e., so it has some hope of unification with the standard model. Just perhaps a square hole and round peg are rudiments of a 4-d space-time?

He can't accept that Ed Witten is smarter than him, rejecting String Theory to the point of being personal but can't propose a better one. If 100 years later they found a way to test the theory then I say Witten is years ahead of this man much like Einstein gravitational waves predicted a 100 years or so ago and is being tested only now.
