This song is way too appropriate, it could almost have been written by Maedhros. I’m never going to be able to hear it any other way now. The Nirnaeth Arnoediad was, militarily speaking, a draw. But it was a victory for Morgoth as soon as Gothmog struck Fingon down. Maedhros lost his connection to morality, to wisdom. He lets Celegorm talk him into the Second Kinslaying which…since when did Maedhros let his brothers tell him what to do? Then, a couple decades later, Maedhros decides all on his own that he’s going to attack a *refugee camp*. This is practically a psychotic break by elven standards. Everyone at the Havens is fleeing the destruction of their home. Oh and by the way, many of them are Noldor: from Nargothrond or Gondolin. For so long these people have looked up to Maedhros as a protector. Many of these elves fought with him in multiple battles. They celebrated his skill as a swordsman. Now they have to face him. Tears unnumbered indeed.

You would think the other else would have some empathy for Maedhros since he did keep his friendship with fingolfin and his sons and was not hostile to them, and so the elves that held the silmarils from the house of Feanor were much more greedier than we would have thought, for they new the madness of the oath and the outcome of refusing to surrender the jewels.
