Thank you for compiling and posting these classic Haven of Rest Hymns. I still remember distinctly how I discovered their broadcast when i was 17 years old in the Philippines. We had a black out that night. I had nothing to do then but to turn on our battery operated transistor radio and "channel surfed". I chanced upon the voice of Ray Orland speaking, then he introduced The Haven of Rest. Their barber shop quartet style, singing a classic hymn was new and sounded very attractive to me. Little did I know, this would be the start of my early Christian walk. I was a "baby Christian" then and I was looking for a way to be led to the Lord much deeper. Ray Ortlund, The Haven of Rest Quartet and the messages from the program became a big part of my Christian growth. I still have some of their original recordings in cassette! This touched a part of me that can only be described as predestined. Thanks once again.

You ask me why I'm happy so I'll just tell you why, Because my sins are gone; And when I meet the scoffers who ask me where they are, I say, "My sins are gone." CHORUS: They're underneath the blood on the cross of Calvary, As far removed as darkness is from dawn; In the sea of God's forgetfulness, that's good enough for me, Praise God, my sins are gone! 'Twas at the old-time altar where God came in my heart, And now my sins are gone; The Lord took full possession, the devil did depart, I'm glad my sins are gone! CHORUS: When Satan comes to tempt me and tries to make me doubt, I say, "My sins are gone, You got me into trouble but Jesus got me out." I'm glad my sins are gone! CHORUS: I'm living now for Jesus, I'm happy night and day, Because my sins are gone; My soul is filled with music, with all my heart I say, "I know my sins are gone!"

As I reflect on the hymn "Abide in me," my heart is deeply stirred by the profound simplicity and earnest plea woven through its verses. This hymn has become a personal prayer, a cry from the depths of my soul, longing for the presence of my Lord to fill every crevice of my life. The words, "Abide in me, oh my Lord, you promised in your holy word," echo the promise Jesus Himself made in John 15:4, reminding me that my life, devoid of His presence, is like a branch cut off from the vine-lifeless and fruitless. The world around us often feels overwhelmingly empty and lost, a sentiment the hymn captures so poignantly. Yet, in the midst of this, it offers a beacon of hope-the invitation to let Christ make His home in our hearts, guiding us with His eternal light. This isn't just a passive wish but a call to action, a decision to open our lives wide to His transformative power and guidance. "My life I throw open wide. Won't you come and make your home inside?" These words challenge me to surrender all, to seek His guidance and light in every decision, acknowledging that without Him, I am utterly lost. To my fellow believers, I share this reflection not as mere words but as a testament to the life-changing truth it holds. Let us together invite the Lord to abide in us, to fill us with His presence, to guide our steps, and to illuminate our paths. May we embrace the cross, ready to follow wherever He leads, with hearts open to His teaching and correction. For in abiding in Him, we find true life, purpose, and the strength to face each day. Let this hymn not just be a song we sing, but a lived reality, as we daily choose to abide in Him and let His word richly dwell in us.

Thank you for responding so quickly! Years ago when Haven wud come on (9:30AM) every morning, the Quartet sang several songs. I wud rush to get a tape in so I cud record my favorite songs. I have a tape, both sides, maybe even 2 tapes. They are 30 years old. Also as I was driving up the hill to go figure skating ⛸, I wud listen to the Haven radio show in my Jeep. That was every morning, I drove an hour to get to the rink. I had the Holy Spirit with me, Ray Ortlund, and the Haven Quartet. It was a very special time . I was young when I began listening and certainly not the style of music I wud ordinarily listen to. But I was hooked. I cudnt wait to grab my skates,, get in my car and take off for the rink. Its probably one of the most memorable times of my life.. And Haven of Rest, the Haven Quartet (with Randy Crenshaw is ⚘) will always have a permanent place in my heart 💖🎀💖

Out in the highways and byways of life, Many are weary and sad; Carry the sunshine where darkness is rife, Making the sorrowing glad. Make me a blessing, make me a blessing, Out of my life may Jesus shine; Make me a blessing, O Savior, I pray, Make me a blessing to someone today. 2 Tell the sweet story of Christ and His love, Tell of His pow’r to forgive; Others will trust Him if only you prove True, every moment you live. 3 Give as ’twas given to you in your need, Love as the Master loved you; Be to the helpless a helper indeed, Unto your mission be true.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve loved them and their exquisite harmonies since discovering them on a radio station that I could barely pick up that I’d listen to late at night. This was in my mid-teens back in the early 80s. I got practically every recording they made until sometime in the 2000s and still have and treasure that music. I liked their sound/ arrangements back in the era when this recording was made. I liked the feel that the accompanist (Ron something? 🙂) gave their sound compared to the guy who took over after him who seemed to have tried to make them sound more “cool”, though some great recordings were made then too. The lovely chord progressions they do with their vocals at 1:06 and 2:27 have been favorites for decades. They were masterful.

How often do we cry, "Lord, bless me!" We sing, "Shine on me". When the Spirit of Christ would prompt us to pray, Lord make me a blessing, shine OUT of me into the lives of others. Matthew 20:28 "The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve others, and to give His life a ransom for many.” The Dead Sea is dead because it has no outflow. A light bulb only illuminates when the power flows through it. Break the circuit and darkness is the result. The nation of Israel wanted to be a terminus of God's blessings, not a channel. When the widow ran out of vessels, the miracle of oil ceased. 1 Out in the highways and byways of life, Many are weary and sad; Carry the sunshine where darkness is rife, Making the sorrowing glad. Refrain: Make me a blessing, Make me a blessing. Out of my life may Jesus shine; Make me a blessing, O Savior, I pray. Make me a blessing to someone today. 2 Tell the sweet story of Christ and his love, Tell of his pow'r to forgive; Others will trust him if only you prove True, ev'ry moment you live. [Refrain] 3 Give as 'twas given to you in your need, Love as the Master loved you; Be to the helpless a helper indeed, Unto your mission be true. [Refrain]

1 In the hour of trial, Jesus, plead for me; Lest by base denial, I depart from Thee. When Thou seest me waver, With a look recall, Nor for fear or favor Suffer me to fall. 2 With forbidden pleasures Would this vain world charm, Or its sordid treasures Spread to work me harm; Bring to my remembrance Sad Gethsemane, Or, in darker semblance, Cross-crowned Calvary. 3 Should Thy mercy send me Sorrow, toil, and woe, Or should pain attend me On my path below, Grant that I may never Fail Thy hand to see; Grant that I may ever Cast my care on Thee. 4 When my last hour cometh, Fraught with strife and pain, When my dust returneth To the dust again, On Thy truth relying, Through that mortal strife: Jesus, take me, dying, To eternal life. Amen.
