Thank you for this as it is helping me to get through my left total knee replacement just 4 days ago. I was never a runner but I would like to return to lifting weights and enjoying Peloton and outdoor activities like hiking and some racket sports like pickleball with my family and friends. It has been painful. I have been given back some lost inches in height (previously had been 6’2”, 226 lbs. ; currently around 238 lbs). Have had some nausea with use of Tylenol and Eliquis, have avoided use of prescribed narcotic pain medication, oxycodone-APAP 10/325 mg. Have performed a few of my starter rehabilitation stretches and exercises since my first home therapy session 2 days ago. Looking to get a lift for my right leg now to match height tomorrow (will consider right knee surgery thereafter). Impressed by your progress and pray to God to even get to half of what you have accomplished. Blessings 🙏

Thank you, you can do it too. It really is just being consistent with the rehab and continuing to work. It’s a lifelong thing that if you stick with it you’ll see great progress and get to where you want to be. The first 2 weeks are the hardest. Get through that and the progress is slow but it happens. Good luck!

I first started at about 9 months post surgery. I was running once a week. Just a half mile to start and slowly building up. I would do it by time. First time I ran 2.5 minutes out and back. So 5 minutes total. Then each week I would add a little more time. Some weeks I wouldn’t add more time and I’d stay at the same time. For example maybe 8 minutes out then 8 back for 16 minutes total. I’d maintain that for several weeks. Eventually I was up to running around 3 miles.

@@TonyArmer whoa that’s a long haul. I’m 60, I run 3.5 miles a few times a week at a 10 min mile. Mellow. When I push it, the pain the next day is intense. But I’m bone on bone and have been putting off the TKR. Knowing it’s the better part of a year’s journey is a tough choice. I also do kettle bells and those squats and split squats actually feel great. It’s amazing how the body finds ways to adapt and finds things it’s still good at. I’m very pleased to see you doing this. The herd begins to thin as far as athletic commitment goes as the years creep up. I intend to be that guy at 70 still doing pull-ups.

Thank you for the video. I just turned 50. I had ACL reconstruction on both legs back in my 20s and I still try to play beach volleyball, but it is so painful. My knees are constantly swelling up. I am really nervous about getting a knee replacement. I would have to have both of my knees replaced. What kind of replacement did you have? Was it the total knee replacement? Do you have full range of motion? Right now if I do any kind of leg extensions or leg curls at the gym, my knees will be really swollen the next day and I have trouble walking. Thank you again for sharing your experience.

If I recall correctly, the Highland Appliance commercials were created locally in the Detroit area by the Doner Agency. In addition to Highland Appliance, they created the world-famous Detroit Zoo Commercial (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYLVZmdupNGthdE), the Faygo sing-along commercial on the Boblo Boat (kzbin.info/www/bejne/goLUqnegbLeLbLs), and the 70s Detroit Institute of Arts commercial (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWaWZpyupdyEqdE). I'm not a doctor so this is not medical advice. All I know is what I've been able to do. Through lots of hard work I've been able to get back to all the physical things I want to do. The knee will be as strong as the muscles you strengthen around it. My surgeon did say do not run. For me running now is more an issue of soft tissue injuries than the knee. Muscle pulls, strains that sort of thing. I think you can do all the things you listed, in moderation. None of us are 20 anymore :)

I'm not a doctor but I do know with my knee it was more about how much arthritis develops and how it limits your daily functions. Post-traumatic arthritis. This form of arthritis can develop after a joint is damaged by a physical injury, such as a knee injury. The damage from the injury can lead to wear and tear of the cartilage, causing inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the joint. Over time, the joint may become arthritic due to the stress placed on it by the injury, potentially leading to osteoarthritis. This is what happened to me and hence needed TKR. My surgeon said the inside of my knee looked like a gravel pit.

Some pain is still expected. I don't think I could say the pain was fully gone until about 1 year in. I'm not a doctor of course and it's different for everyone. The main thing for me was to keep exercising and rehabbing. I still do that every day and it's been 6 years now.

I can only speak to my experiences. I searched and searched and couldn't find any real info before the TKR. That's why I did this whole video series. From fresh out of surgery through rehab, to being as active as possible. My surgeon is very supportive of me being super active. Except for running, lol. Which I really stopped doing. I'll do short agility stuff like in this video but I don't run for distance anymore. I don't want to wear the knee out early. It's supposed to last 30 years. I play beach volleyball, snowboard, disc golf, do a wide variety of workouts, deadlift, squat, I can bike 20 miles at a time. All of this with zero issues for the knee. I put in a lot of time and effort rehabbing. I still train my legs twice a week and add in daily foam rolling, stretching and flexibility work as well. I've done zoom calls and phone calls with people all over the world who have seen these videos. I'm happy to share my advice and experience. I'm very happy with the results and everything I'm able to do. I'm not a doctor of course, and am not offering medical advice. I've been training since the age of 15 and I'm now 54. I'm pretty knowledgeable about fitness and living a healthy lifestyle like I'm sure you are as a PE teacher. I would encourage anyone to do the TKR if they're willing to put in the work. I hope that helps!

@@bradfrazer4137 your life is definitely not over. You can go for years with less meniscus before it leads to a TKR. And even after a TKR as you can see from these videos. I had an ACL tear at 21. didn't get the ACL fixed until 31. In that time I continued to play sports and run with a torn ACL. The looseness of the missing ACL contributed to tearing up the meniscus. When the ACL was repaired they took out some meniscus too. At 40 I tore more meniscus playing beach volleyball. Jump, land, twist, tear. I had a meniscus cleanup at 40. I did the same thing again at 47. At 48 I had the TKR. No more jumping :)

Great video! I had two total knee replacements in 2021 at age 61. In the first year of recovery (after about 6 weeks of rehab for each knee), I did a ton of bike riding (mostly Peloton) and walking to rebuild my leg strength, which was key, I think. You must work hard, be patient, and trust the process - it takes time. There were a lot of discouraging moments along the way when it seemed like progress had stalled. After about 12 months I was running 2-3 times a week (and 2-3 triathlons) a year. I'm doing everything I love without limitations (other than speed!) Question - do you still do the speed ladder work?

@@TonyArmerThe Consensus among Orthopaedic surgeons is that more research is required into the full impact running has on artificial joints. However there does appear sufficient evidence to urge caution - for now. After all, even common sense suggests that a moving artificial joint will eventually wear when placed under stress, whether it’s in your knee, your hip or your washing machine. So until we are satisfied that the evidence really does support a claim that running or jogging with a total knee replacement is safe, our position remains with the majority: It will increase the risk of wear. It will increase the risk of requiring revision surgery or a further replacement. And repeat replacements tend to be less effective than the one before. They all suggest low impact, basically use a bike rather than running.
@TonyArmer

Absolutely my surgeon said the same thing. But I wanted to know could I, would I be able to. I ran once a week no more than two miles. Once I felt good and was able I ran form running on grass or turf. Short distances on sand in beach volleyball with no jumping. Some people want to do distance or triathlons. That’s a goal and a lifestyle they’ve lived. Can they do it after surgery that’s the question. And yes they can if they choose. That’s not how I choose to stay fit and can I run if I want to? Yes. Do I run for distance or often? No. Lots of cycling and other things. But if someone wants to run and it’s a goal they are able to again with hard work.
