I remember my F-27 sailing herself through the great schooner race with me leaning against the mast. She would bare off, pass at a respectable distance to leeward, then bare up to he original course. The balance of that boat was exceptional. She would heave too under bare pole as I put up the main, then the jib, then sheet in and go. Would heave too under jib while I reefed. Ian, I miss you!

a palpable description! Great feature of the centerboard is that it can be angled back a bit to balance the helm if needed.

Brother, where is your jack line?
@djmydlack19 күн бұрын
Complicated. Case of the right tool, wrong situation. Jackline use not without real risk (drown dragging) - worth it for offshore or foul weather on leaners (monohulls.) This trip: in-shore, mid-summer, mild weather, wide multihull. Would rather swim home ( 2nm) alive than dragged.
@RaymondSackenheim19 күн бұрын
@djmydlack watching as you precariously balance yourself as you filmed made me think of the IBM executive who went sailing by himself and all they found was his boat sailing by itself. Do be careful.

@djmydlack ya you need a knotted rope abaft hanging in the water when underway, so you can get back up..Anyway where I live you would be shark food before you reached shore swimming 😅

Loved the way it set the stage, provided the context for the early multihull movement. Especially liked the profile silhouette with the growing trimaran. I’m sorry but the final visuals with the upside-down man and the sunset colors didn’t work for me. Likewise, I wasn’t sure about the black screen for the funeral. Brown has a wealth of video, audio and writing to work with. I am so glad y’all undertook to edit it and provide it to multihull fans. I wish Newick had been as prolific, especially during his years on St. Croix. Thank you, professor!

Thanks. The first time I was ever on a multihull was in the early 1970's, on what was probably a Searunner from the 60's, a yellow boat called Bon Bini (welcome) in Aruba where I grew up. The original Bon Bini was purchased by an American, Art L'amour, who started a dive operation. That boat was eventually lost in a storm, but Art bought another Searunner which he also named the Bon Bini and by that time I was a seasoned diver. When Art was away for a month for medical reasons, I sailed that boat helping to keep his business going. Those boats made great dive boats because the deck space gave us room for about 20 scuba tanks and about 10 passengers who all had a place to sit and hang out. We used the aft cabin for our inventory of other dive gear like masks, fins, back packs, regulators wet suits, lead weights etc.

I'm not sure. I do know he was very active emailing and posting in forums, supporting TT720 builders even 20 years on. He was very directly engaged in controlling the quality of his boats (by home-builders or pros)*. On that note, I shudder to think how he might have treated me for the extent that I have modded the original design. *I acquired my boat in 2019 long after Ian had passed.
@onno_vocks25 күн бұрын
@@djmydlack I was first introduced to his work when asked to help build an F9A in Burnsville, Mn. This was in the 90's, but by that time Trailertri plans were no longer available. His argument was that the F24 and F25C were better boats, but I also think that his involvement with Corsair may have taken up a lot of his time. I'm still a fan of plywood boats and balsa cored materials would not be my choice if it were my boat. I visited another guy in Mn who was building an F25 using bead and cove cedar strips, like a canoe. The method saved weight because the bead and cove on top and bottom of the strips reduced the amount of epoxy needed, but wasted more wood and time in cutting the profile on each strip. I like the mod you made for the solar panels but have no clue how Ian would have reacted. It doesn't really matter; it's your boat and it has to work for you. I don't think it detracts from the boat's good looks so run with it :)

The ONLY criticism I have of this well-thought-out and finished boat is the traveler, which would be much more helpful if it was at least the full width of the cockpit. Adjusting leech tension and sail angle is important, I think you’ll find.
@djmydlackАй бұрын
Thanks for your comment. You might see either in this video or another that I use a two-sheet system. I eliminated the original Farrier-designed traveler because it obstructed the cockpit (I have particular mobility issues and need an uninterrupted cockpit.) Likewise, an aft-mounted traveler wasn't compatible with my 'solar panel bimini'. So I employ a two-sheet system (a sheet and a preventer) similar to how Quorning has designed into their similar-sized Dragonfly. As the first summer unfolded I was able to get pretty good sail shape control (the sail is a bit tired and blown out at this point.)

Hi Dan: Merry Christmas! I just stumbled upon your video's on KZbin. Very nice meeting you. I have a multi sort of sailboat question or more to ask you, if you are willing to answer. I will try and add a pic or 2 in my email to you....here goes. This boat in my yard is a PROJECT. I bought it without it having a centerboard. It is a Sandpiper 565. I am thinking of converting it to a trimaran using a couple hobie 14 hulls.(should I say (ama's?). I am also thinking maybe building leeboards. I think a flaw in its build was the centerboard, so I am not even consider8ng a replacement centerboard...I thinkmaybe with the shape of the hull, my best choice would be the leeboard set would be the best route! Do you agree to that choice? Of course, I am trying to sell it for the past two years...but no buyer's. Ha,ha..

@@sail4life Then buy a heavy comfort container monohull. You know them, more energy wasting machines than at home. And water beds, of course. All twenty cabins have two water beds. And two showers a cabin, one for a millionair woman and the other for her billionair husband. That makes sixty shower cells. Just like at home.
