If you can take the opportunity to watch all 8 of the masterclass videos do it. A great insight and learning opportunity. This is real flyfishing

Harry Huff! What a guy. Half the time you're talking to him you're gobsmacked looking at pics of 15lb bonefish and 40lb Atlantic salmon, the other half of the time you're crying laughing cause he's hilarious.

That's true what you say about his 'odd' tying style. But I'm like Oliver, a left-hander in a right-handed world. We just make up our own workarounds. Hopefully, these videos are good for right-handers to learn from because they are the 'wrong way round'. In another video on the channel, he shows how to cast 'off the wrong shoulder'. This is needed if you are very right or left-handed and are fishing on the wrong bank. But being a lefty in a right-handed world, he could cast just as well with his left and his right hand. He gave me the confidence to try this as well. I was never as good as he was, but it is a valuable skill to have.

Not only does he tie left-handed but he ties wrapping the thread towards him not away from him. Very unique.

Most of the flylines comes with a welded loop to connect the leader , I was thinking of using a red marker on the flyline instead of putting on a braided sleeve

No, just add the red marker pen to the braided loop that you use to connect your fly line tippets. I know that somewhere in the many pockets of that fishing waistcoat would be a red marker pen in case it had faded a little. Sorry, my answer is not that exciting, but Oliver always went for the simple, cheap, straightforward solution as any good Yorkshireman would!

Thank you so much for your quick reply. Would you recommend just color the tip of fly line for sighting?

The red sighter is just the braided sleeve on the end of the fly line. Oliver always referred to them as his minicon. Minicon is a brand of braided sleeves made by Roman Moser, it was the brand Oliver used. They're widely available. They are usually sold without any colour, just clear nylon, but sometimes they are sold with a coloured sleeve - he did not use those. He always used a red marker pen (permanent & waterproof ink) to make them red. Any braided sleeve will do, as long as you can get it to take colour from your marker pen.

Really enjoyed the informative video. Can you please let me know what is the red sighter material being used on the flyline. Thank you

The only presenter you can trust who does not start off with "What's up guys" It's fascinating to see the fishes apparent lack of concern when the line and leader passes over it.

Russell, thanks for your kind comments. He was hugely talented and a total gent. I produced and directed all the videos, and he was a natural in front of the camera; it was his passion - And it made it my dream job. (I'm also a left-handed fly fisherman, but not in the same class by a long way). I'm so happy to be able to put these videos up for all to see. There's so much there, even for experienced fly fishers / fly tyers to pick up a tip or two.

Where to buy if you don't tie. Depends on where you are, but there are plenty of places in the UK; Google will guide - Fulling Mill Flies sell worldwide and I'm sure they make it.

It is a fantastic pattern. And as Oliver says, Marjan Fratnik used it in many other colours besides tan. Pink worked very well with Grayling. And I'm sure tied in yellow for the Yellow May hatch?

Yes, but his job was teaching fly fishing and fly tying. But by the time we were working together filming, he'd pretty much retired. He didn't watch TV; during the day, he fished or worked in his garden, which he loved. The evenings were for fly tying. You may not want to tie these patterns or have the time. But learn from these, and you'll make better decisions when buying flies. There's a huge range in quality, use this information to make decisions about what to buy that will catch on a difficult day. It's also about what you want out of fly fishing. I always get much more of a thrill if I catch a fish on a fly that I've tied myself. And I'm rubbish, my flies look like something the cat dragged in.

If spending the time tying these is not for you. There are now some on the market that are reasonably good imitations, and the imitative patterns work very well. I filmed Oliver fishing this fly, and his catch rate was pretty impressive - And he was having to contend with the needs of a film crew and a very fussy director. Look for Sculpins that have been tied with the Roman Moser Tungsten Sculpin Heads. Fulling Mill Flies is a good place to start. Flies are a few quid each. I have Sculpin tied by Roman Moser himself, using one of his Sculpin heads; it took him a couple of minutes to tie. I'll never fish with that one, as it was tied by Roman, and I would have a breakdown if I lost it on the bottom. Not if I'd lost one, I'd tied!

In reply to Josh - yes, it may damage the loop a bit, but that has a breaking strain of 30 pounds or more. The tippet end has a braking strain of just 3 pounds, so it does not matter one jot if you damage the loop a bit. What matters is that the whole leader setup flows along at the same speed as the current. A big loop will cause drag and will cause suspicion for wild and/or wiley fish as the flies will be behaving oddly to the fish. Please watch other videos when Oliver is fishing this set up, and you'll see this in action. - Thanks

Excellent presentation not only of the video but also of the artificial mayfly by Oliver Edwards. Frank Sawyer used polaroid glasses in order to help spot trout, there are two photographs clearly illustrating this in my 1957 first edition of Nymphs and the Trout - see 2min 50 sec. Frank Sawyer was innovative in so many aspects of fly fishing, he was a genius in fact.

Yes, Oliver always called them a Minicon, it was the brand he used - Roman Moser. It's just the braided loop most people use on the end of the fly line to attach the monofilament tippet. He liked Roman's ones because of the quality, and they either had coloured sleeves so you could see them in fast, broken water, or they were easy to colour with a permanent pen. They also knew each other quite well from fly-tying demonstrations. Oliver ties one of Roman's flies, his Balloon Caddis, that video is up on this channel @LearnFlyFishing. The Roman Moser Minicons are easy to find. Just type it into Google
