With flowers and leaves( like chamomile) Would you just put them in a tea cup and let them steep with hot water and with dense roots, berries, barks and roots simmer them? Or all herbs require to just be simmered in a pot? Been treating herbs wrong.. and some of them are combined so I want to treat herbs better and with respect if that makes sense.
@TheHerbalistsPath
@TheHerbalistsPath 3 ай бұрын
Yes, with flowers and leaves I pour hot water over them. With more dense plant material, I simmer them. If I've got a combo, I'll likely just do the pour over, and recognize that I may not extract the full medicinal potential of the barks, roots, and berries.

Would you make a tincture out of plantain? If so would you use 80 proof vodka or olive oil and how long would you wait before straining?
@TheHerbalistsPath
@TheHerbalistsPath Жыл бұрын
I do make tincture out of plantain every year. I also make oils. There's a difference between herbal oils and tinctures, many differences actually. And, for a tincture, I don't use vodka, not strong enough. I sues a 70%+ alcohol to best extract the medicinal properties, I'll let it macerate for about 6 weeks. 💚 Stay tuned for my Medicine Makin' Mommas program that will help you with alllll this and then some.

@TheHerbalistsPath

Great question, and honestly it’s going to depend on the kid and the herb and several other variables. But, in general start with a teaspoon or so per cup of water.

It's going to depend on where you are, and if you're growing from a cutting, or potted plant or seeds. But ,in general, planting an elder shrubbery in spring is a good idea.

Such a blessing to be able to pass on herbal knowledge to our little ones and it's amazing how much they absorb just watching us. I purchased a small amount of Oregon Grape dried root shavings, but I can't figure out what to do with it. I tried to create a powder by grinding it with a spice grinder but it is too hard. Not sure if I can make a tea with this. The description on the product webpage says "intended for further proccessing."
@TheHerbalistsPath
@TheHerbalistsPath Жыл бұрын
I would tincture it asap. Grinding dried roots can be really hard on a spice grinder. You could also decoct it, but it will be far from delightful to taste. We have a tincture ratio chart in my Making Herbal Tinctures class if you're up for a deeper dive in how to do it. You can access it here: www.theherbalistspath.com/how-to-make-herbal-tinctures
