Woah! That's a dangerous act you did at 1:29! You're not supposed to touch the operational end of the device! Edit: YOU ALSO LOOKED AT THE OPERATIONAL END OF THE DEVICE?!?! You need to be more careful with that, man!

this video is very old and I know you wont reply, but do you have any tutorials on portals, and how did you make the man fall in the portal so realistically at 0:16? I tried to replicate this effects but it just doesn't look good like yours...

Thanks for watching my video, sadly I dont have any tutorials on my build process. I had used Adobe After Effects and had created a spherical shape and then added distortion turbulence to it, vector blur, along with animated noise. On top of that I had used stock footage of flames and hue shifted them to blue or orange, and used the plugin "Particular" to add particles flying around the portals. As far as the falling sequence, for filming it I had my friend shoot the portal, then walk off frame, then walk back into frame and perform a small jump, as if he had just landed. In After Effects I had cut a still of him out (rotoscoping/masking), just before he walked off screen and animated that still frame of him down through a portal. All the moving camera work had to be 3d tracked, and at the time I had used a program called PF Track, now adays, I think you can 3D track in after effects and get a good result, but to make your life easier, locking down the camera is always quicker, but wont look as cool. Hope this helps

This is, BY FAR, the best portal VFX video I have seen. I love how you don't shy away from showing tons of views through the portals. Most vids I have seen try to show the actual portals as little as possible. And the fact that this was done 12 YEARS AGO??? that is crazy. Excellent work on this awesome video.

At this current time I only sell the pattern for it so that others can make it themselves. I simply do not have the time like I used to to make them myself to sell.

Just rewatched it again after a few years. Even today the effects are absolutely AMAZING! and 10 years ago? I don't even want to start. They were SO good that 11 year old me believed it was real for a week! 😂

A wonderful instructional video. Good pace, everything included. Not 'teachy' or 'matey' - very professional. I've only recently started leatherworking, but your vid made me feel like i could make this, if i take my time. Might not look as good as yours, but would be functional. I love the way you dyed the leather with an airbrush - creates a finish I really like. Thank you very much.

Fortunately, I have an actual Portalgun toy so i can skip the most tedious part; modelling. I would still need to green screen things in order to make the portals actually work.
