Do you disconnect the hydraulic lines or drain them

Hi, Ben! I know this was 8 years ago, but I recently got a 1991 Coupe Quattro and I would like to know if you have information regarding the V8 swap. Thanks!

What does it smell like? Like unburnt diesel fuel or more like sweet odor? Looks whitish...bad injector nozzles maybe.

I didnt even know these cars existed still! I have parts for thes cars. Used though. 5000 5 cylinder, 2.0 diesel. Been sitting on these parts forever thinking there was no cars in existance! I miss the unique sound these engines had.

Looks like my old '81 5000 Diesel. Never wanted to fire first, second try. Smokey and noisy when it did. Great car though.

Your poor Audi needs a little help, they should start better than that. Having personally owned over 30 of these 1983, 5000 turbodiesels, I have lots of experience keeping them going, I live in upstate New York, where it routinely gets into the negative digits. when they are tuned properly, they will start up and run and idle on the first try without much hesitation, or misfire, or even white smoke.. white smoke is an indication of either bad glow plugs, (Bosch only) low compression, poorly, adjusted valves or injection pump timing not correct. It can also be bad injector nozzles as lots of people tended to replace these nozzles with non-turbo diesel nozzles, which are a lower 130Bar pressure nozzle and do not atomize the fuel as fine as a turbo diesel nozzle, which is set to 155 bar.

It did need a lot of help. I ended up pulling the engine after a compression test showed about half what I should get. New rings, valve job, head decked, bearings and reinstalled. I also replaced the glow plugs after making dedicated wires for each and replaced the injectors, rebuilt the injection pump. It runs like a dream now!

@@castledben awesome, glad you got that all sorted out. I’m surprised you were able to just get away with piston rings as the culprit for low compression. those blocks are super soft and usually when they need rings the blocks are at the point where they’re out of round and somewhat oval and usually need to be oversized. I love the cars and I love the engines but I have found that 75 to 100,000 mile seems to be the magic number where they need some attention as the compression will start to go down. I did find a company that makes dry sleeve inserts for the 1.6 Volkswagen diesel, they happen to be the same size as what the Audi uses and in one of my rebuilds I had the machine shop install dry sleeves. So far it’s been running like a champ. We will see when I get above the hundred thousand mile mark if she still has good compression. I have to make a video of one of mine running cold, I always thought they were a bit on the noisy side when cold, so I installed VW 1.9 AAZ turbo diesel injector nozzle holders as they are two-stage and really quiet them down a lot at idle and low throttle applications.

This turned out to be a bad OPRV - the 3 piece valve had some piece of debris keeping it from closing. right after this I lost all oil pressure. Took it out, cleaned the heck out of everything and changed the oil, all was well
