He was a lover of the music of Sibelius. I met him at a performance of the 5th Symphony at Cheltenham Town Hall many years ago. I quoted a review by Peter Heyworth, the Observer music critic, who described the symphony as a 'ragbag of romantic cliches'. Chris Gunning was the mildest of men but this was too much and brought forth a withering comment 'And who on earth has heard of Peter Heyworth???''

In the second half of 20th century the greatest opera is Olivier Messiaen's only opera Saint Francis of Assisi. It may even be the greatest opera of 20th century really.

Made the discovery of Gunning via the Hammer film Hands Of The Ripper, which has no official album release. So a collection such as this is good way to make more accessible his work.

Gunning's theme for 'Poirot' is, arguably, the greatest theme song for any Television show. I've heard this opinion expressed by many people. But this work is, by no means, his only claim to fame. It is a mere surface to his great talent.

I was hoping you’d do a special programme on HB at some stage, and I wasn’t disappointed. This is a wonderful listen, thank you! I absolutely agree about Bernstein’s emotion you both speak of 35mins in. Very genuine and never false. Happy 90th Birthday Sir Humphrey!

Gunning's music for the film Rogue Male is absolutely gorgeous, very much in the English pastoral tradition, with allusions to Vaughan Williams's Tallis Fantasia. We need a recording of this.

I still have my email correspondence with Mr. Gunning from over 15 years ago when I asked him his score for "Journey to Kilimanjaro" narrated by the late Sir John Hurt. He couldn't recall if he had it preserved or if it was ever officially released. Even the NatGeo documentary that used his score is impossible to get to this very day.

What kind of ligature and mouthpiece was he using? The ligature looked like a gold Charles Bay but, I could not read the front of the mouthpiece. Anyone? I love his sound! His bottom lip stays out a bit and it certainly, does not hinder his playing.

This is an original composition not an arrangement - arrangements are where the tune exists already. This is Lawson's tune - but it somehow sounds like it's been written before, have no idea why..

I heard this the first time in the Michael Powell film, BLACK NARCISSUS, sung by nuns. Their rendition was more soothing, as a lullaby, which is what it is. I love this. Very moving and beautiful.

It makes no sense. He is wrong. Let's see if he can duplicate that tone without an actual instrument.

I was at a concert he played at in Finland. He's great at what he does. Unfortunately someone had to bring their small noisy children to the concert... They played Mozart's Clarinet concerto and Beethoven's 3rd symphony 'Eroica'. Otherwise it was great but there's something about his clarinet's sound that I don't like. The parts where he played very low sounded great though.
