This is very misleading. Be AWARE that the U.S. is NOT the only place where non-British terms are used. For instance, my wife, from China, would call it an elevator, not a lift. She'd say bathroom, not "toilet" or "loo". She'd say apartment, not "flat". She'd say "pants", not "trousers", and she'd say "shopping cart", not "trolly". She learned her English IN China, not America. Likewise, I live in Scandinavia, and here, when people DO speak English, it's NOT unusual in my experience to use terms like "bathroom" even when there's not an actual bath inside, "pants", "pissed" to mean "angry" (not "drunk"), "elevator", and so on. Swedish English seems MUCH more in line with U.S. English than UK English despite physically being closer to the UK, but of course, there's variation - some DO say "toilet", or "flat", and what people in the U.S. would call "dorms" people here call "corridors", which in the U.S. would be akin to a hallway. Meanwhile, I've observed people from many countries using terms many in the U.S. would. I suppose I grew up with a bit of both because for example, I've always - along with my mother - said "dodgy" - which I said one time when I was in the U.S.and was asked if I was British and told it sounded british (news to me). I have been known to call people "twit" and "Tw@t" - which in my experience does NOT seem common in the states. I've said "cheers" and "bloody" on more than a few occasions, while I might refer to it as a "bathroom" as a general term, and use "lift" and "elevator" interchangeably (by the way, seems Aussies say "elevator" too from what I've seen). I'd say maybe just "trash" - I don't think anyone hAS actua CANS anymore - or "trash bins", or on occasion, "bin", "garbage", and "rubbish bin" - I've used ALL of those. People in the U.S., by the way, DO say shopping centre sometimes instead of mall, though will spell it center (as would my Chinese wife). People in the states call it a "sidewalk" - so does she. Me, I'll adapt it to where I am - if I'm in the EU, maybe foot path - in the U.S., sidewalk. If I'm in the UK I'd call it a car park, but when in the U.S. I'd call it a parking lot. I find it's easiest to just go with the terminology of wherever you live, though I undnerstand that might be hard fr some and easy to slip up on. My grandparents called what you wear on your legs outside "trousers", so I'm USED to that - but I ALSO use "pants". I'm fine switching to "torch" when that's the regional tendency. Never bothers me, EXCEPT for calling it a "hoover", which is a BRAND - and, again, some countries OUTSIDE the U.S. call it a vacuum, too (even IN the U.S., usually you'd just say "vacuum" for short, not "vacuum cleaner".
