China is not aiming for socialism, just a combination capitalist socialist society guided by Marxist communist ideology/leadership. A pure socialist society is proven not to work, too much capitalism is creating societal fracture in western countries. While most western countries are ruled by liberal democratic governments that neither very liberal or democratic, the Chinese government is not very socialist or communist even if they profess to be so.

There are NO direct translations for most Chinese words....they are based on context.
@elbowroom79939 күн бұрын
This is not only for Chinese languages. All languages need to be translated according to concept and not word for word. For example, French “Je me lave la tête”, is not translated “I myself wash the head”, but should be “I wash my hair”.

@@elbowroom7993 You can get a strong sense of this if you study the Buddhist sutras. The ones I study are Sanskrit or old Chinese (circa 600-800 CE, not sure what that would be called). To really get a sense of the word in Sanskrit, the word the Chinese chose, and what a few English translators chose tells you a great deal, and you start to see how conceptual knowledge is part of the problem of understanding them. I already started learning Sanskrit. I really wanted to learn Mandarin to try to get to the point of understanding the older version of the language the sutras were written in. I didn't have a good opportunity until RedNote. I really hope Americans start creating online Mandarin groups to learn together. This could be one of the greatest moments in internet history if we become friends and merge in cyberspace. Whatever rules China imposed on RedNote resulted in such a positive place, so I would hope I am able to stay there. Just the difference between RedNote and American social networks.. I don't feel more anxiety from using it. It's a place with people more like me even if we don't speak the language. This is catastrophic for our ruling class.

Counterpoints to Criticism of TikTok Users Migrating to Xiaohongshu: Hypocrisy of American Censorship: Critics label users as "naive" for turning to a Chinese app but ignore the growing censorship and control in the U.S., where bans and surveillance increasingly limit free expression under the guise of "security." Systemic Exploitation in the U.S.: Many Americans endure stagnant wages, unaffordable healthcare, and corporate exploitation. Their frustration with this system, compounded by unchecked corporate power, drives them to explore social media alternatives like Xiaohongshu that do not align themselves with the neoliberal capitalist agenda that leaves everyone poor and in crisis other than the rich elite. Violence and Instability in U.S. Streets: Rising violence, homelessness, and social unrest in U.S. cities starkly contrast with perceptions of safer streets and accessible public services in China. For some, this exploration isn’t naivety-it’s a search for something better. Privileged Criticism: Those dismissing these users often benefit from privilege, overlooking the daily crises many Americans face. For the disenfranchised, the appeal of functional infrastructure and stability is not ignorance-it’s survival. Rebellion Against Exploitation: Migrating to Xiaohongshu symbolizes defiance against a system that prioritizes elite interests over the public’s well-being. It’s not naivety but a demand for alternatives in the face of domestic failings.

It's not do anything illegal, it's write anything bad or critique about China on print or a social media site. The pen is mightier than the sword when you critique about the government in China, Russia, Iran, Brunei, Singapore and North Korea etc... So it's more hazardous to your health if you visit these countries after writing anything bad about them. This demonstrate the video's author naivete and simplicity...

A few years ago I introduced the Beatles to a class I taught in Thailand. 13-15 year olds I guess. A number of kids were immediately hooked on Eight Days a Week, with the video showing them at Shea Stadium. In another class of kids a couple of years younger I changed course and showed them a class of the mock Beatles band, the Rutles and the song Hold My Hand. The kids were happily singing Hold My Hand, Yeah, Yeah! during their lunch break. If the Beatles don't get you, the Rutles will.

This is a nice change! I've watched just hundreds of videos of people walking or driving around, hundreds where they are concentrating on some specific thing (street food mostly), but everyone seems to ignore the details of what's along the road! I wouldn't mind a little more detail if available (say from the signage which I can't read). "This is a little restaurant, it has local style food". Anyway I was surprised to find this, it's something I've been clamoring for. I keep saying "If I ever get to that market (or town, or neighborhood) I'll spend a YEAR on one block or so, and never run out of material".
