Another option, with both hands on the cane, after the parry you are very close to being able to grab your opponent's cane or arm. This stops their offense and gives you a free strike or two that can't be blocked. At 3:54, you were very close to doing that when your hand reached forward to block as you attacked the leg.

So a Flip is hitting with a short edge and Flicks are changing between hammer & saber grips. Would a Flip be used after your strike is parried to set up a thrust over their stick?
@bartitsuantagonisticsforum5322
@bartitsuantagonisticsforum5322 7 ай бұрын
Yes, although it is more often used to bering the strike in as a feint and then flip at the last moment to go around their parry and land the thrust.

"Fouetter" is the verb "to whip" . when they use the accented "e" at the end, its the past tense "whipped"...for some reason they use this past tense to name the kicks. So a "fouet" is literally a whip and describes the snapping action of the kick not the circularity of it. A "chasse" (same accented E on the end) is a thrust...so they are two very different categories of kicks. Technically a Fouette kick is a "foutte horizontal" (on its side like the roundhouse) but since the "fouette vertical" (front snap kick) is illegal they don't talk about it, except in the self defense context. Classic savate is more about accuracy then "power" in the modern Muay Thai sense. The shoes are supposed to do the work so the snap or whip of the leg powers it and the snap back is very important in classical savate/BF so that the leg is not grabbed. The power kick would be the chasse horizontal or the side thrust kick- very similar to the karate version (which some sources claim Funakoshi's son got the modern karate kicks from the French army that had military advisors in Japan for many years) but with a high chamber and striking with the heel of the shoe.

A "chasse" is a push or a thrust. So a chasse frontal is like a stomp kick thrown forward, with the knee coming up to the chest and the foot lined up in front of it, then pushed out.-like kicking a door in. A more conventional "front snap kick" would be some kind of "fouette vertical' , which is illegal in modern BF/Savate, but its the snapping or whipping action that makes it a "fouette", which is more how I would describe the first kick you showed.

Savate kicking is divided into 3 general mechanical categories. "Whipping" (or snapping), "Thrusting" and"'slinging" (a full leg swing from the hip). The Coup de pied bas is classically slung/swung from the hip, if you cock the knee to push or thrust it out its considered a different (kind of) kick (often called a "chasse Italian"- Italian thrust). The usual target of the coup de pied bas is the lower shin, right above the ankle. The shin bone is thinner there so it has more potential to injure. The standard way is to scrape the foot along the floor, this is usually explained as building up some resistant energy to get a harder kick but what is also less understood is this scraping action (which does not make as much sense in street situations depending on the kind of foot ware and surface you are on)- makes the foot travel in a better straight line and prevents the swing of the leg becoming a wide upward arc. This can easily miss the target or just deflect upward. The leg naturally wants to do this so be careful when kicking higher on the shin since this wide arc upwards can easily make the kick miss or loose a lot of steam. There is a "snapping/whipping" version that i think is similar to what i have seen in UK style"purring" that I like better for higher kicks on the shin.

As with every martial art. No matter how well practiced and good you are. If someone pulls a knife, do your best to get away from the situation first. Engage only if there is no other option. Unless the attacker is an absolute complete imbecile, you will get cut or stabbed.

very interesting video - one question - you don't mention your thumbs - are they hammer grip or sabre grip - can't tell from the video I'm thinking sabre but not sure

It is the saber grip that you use for Doyle style, you have a good eye. By pressing the thumbs on the cane and pushing forward whole time, you can really build up the stored force for when you release one hand.

Excellent - enjoying these videos - the Cunningham one I really enjoyed. You might be interested to know I've been practicing the front guard a bit differently. Lang's "Walking Stick Defence" which contains the Vigny system (we presume) says the following about the front stance "right foot forward, toe straight to the front, body well balanced; weight oh the back leg" So that is also how I have been doing it. Having the weight on the back foot (as an old Wing Chun student) allows the front foot to instantly: knee kick, shin kick or shin scrape or stomp. :)
