sorry for not clarifying, i answered it in one of my previous comment replies: @mybuildz6989 1 year ago i believe i used 1/3 vinegar, 1/3 salt and 1/3 flour (to make it pasty). vinegar, in general, is a very good cleaning acid, works well on all kinds of metals. but i would suggest looking up videos specifically targeting brass cleaning techniques. i used bees wax and mineral oil mix (melt), which is one of the best coatings for wood, furniture and what have you, especially when in contact with moisture. as for nickel, you can easily "de-nickelize" metal by electroplating, reversing polarities, thus moving nickel away from the desired object to the nickel rod.

thanks for watching the video, bro, but i’ll take my chances👌 out of curiosity, how would you know that without even looking at the structural drawings and calculations? i’ve had it checked and re-checked by several engineers and the only comment i got that i’s an overkill, and it could support another 10 floors on top of it with ease. i assume you are an engineer of some sort to be saying that - care to share exactly which part of the structure made you say that?

Great job sir. Do those concrete blocks have a different color shade from the normal blocks?
@mybuildz6989
@mybuildz6989 Жыл бұрын
thank you sir! yes indeed, a good observation, forgot to mention in the video, the reason for a different color is that all the outside walls are built of pumice blocks, which is a lightweight concrete aggregate. they are much wider (over a foot, while regular blocks are half of that), and have 9 sections (pockets) inside. regular concrete blocks usually have 4-6 sections. and the reason is energy efficiency - they retain temperature much better than regular concrete blocks, and are half the weight. but of course, they cost more :)

thank you! i agree, especially in the areas which are prone to tornadoes or earthquakes. i did some research before deciding on the type of construction, and concrete/cinderblock seemed to have a few more advantages. it's being built in the "other" Georgia, across the pond ;)

So I have a harmonica where the wood is snapped in the same place, what wood did you use and does it have to be the same as the original. I’m gonna play mine since it’s easy to take with me, I bought it on eBay in bad condition because I want to try a wood one and it was cheap, I’ll get it tuned but I’m wondering if I should clean it up first or let a professional clean it. It’s also a double sided M. Hohner but a different model. It’s a pretty fun instrument if you ever get the urge to play even if you don’t want to play a piece of history

@mybuildz6989
@mybuildz6989 Жыл бұрын
glad you liked it and found it useful. unfortunately, i don't have a cost breakdown per each component, but here are a few things that might give you some idea on the cost: the retaining wall cost as much as one floor of the house, if not more, counting leveling the back yard where the house is standing. took about 10-12 metric tons of rebar (of different gauges), can't remember exactly how many cubic yards/meters of concrete it took (though it can be counted going through the blueprints), and had to bring in the pump truck to pour it all in, which costs as much as a full truck of concrete (costly, but less labor consuming), about $7k for roofing and $10k aluminum windows and back doors (materials and labor). overall cost to this point, however, is about $70-80k total (materials, labor, engineer, constructor, excavators, trucks, building materials for forms, rent of the jacks, scaffolding, etc... - i mean all of it). hope this helps a bit.

thanks for the tip. it's my first time restoring a harmonica, however i assure you that it's much more playable now than it used to be. of course, as it was all rusty inside. of course, it may need to be tuned by a professional, but since it's more of a showpiece on the shelf rather than a "usable" playing instrument, i'll let my kids do the rest, if they decide to actually play it :)

That's not true at all! Careful cleaning (as was shown in the video) is absolutely fine. Removal and replacement of reeds should be left to professional harmonica tuners and repairers, because it's a specialist skill.
@mybuildz6989
@mybuildz6989 Жыл бұрын
@@boblambert8985 Absolutely agree. And it definitely needs tuning, but not because of the restoration (or lack of the skill), but because it's a hundred-year-old piece, and for the past 60 years of it my grandfather had in his possession (plus my 20), it's never been played or tuned for sure.
