Patrick Bateman: Do you like Huey Lewis and The News? Paul Allen: They're OK. Patrick Bateman: Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Wait a minute. "Hip to be Square" is not in that album. Then why Patrick blasted it on full sound while praising "Sports"?

I was 7 when this came out and I loved it. In the years that followed, I found new interests in metal and hard rock; i then found this way to commercial / new wave. But after not listening to this for 30 years I can take a fresh look at it. I think it's definitely a good album and I can see how this was a rock solid in the 80's scene.

Didn't Marty McFly have the poster "Sports" up on his wall in his bedroom in Back to the Future?

david fox he did indeed! So many great Huey references in those movies. Power of Love is what old Marty is trying (and failing) to play in BTTF2 before being fired...Huey of course was the "prom music director" in BTTF ("you're too darn loud!"). Niles is also listening to on his stereo Power of Love at the end of BTTF3 when he meets Marty at the stop light. So many great little references! I might be missing some

The News was/is one of the GREATEST bands that ever existed. I just couldn't see Huey Lewis making it without the News... talk about such a dynamic band. Hopper, Gibson Chippolina, Hayes and Colla... perfection ....

This whole album thematically syncs up nicely with Back to the Future a la Pink Floyd and Wizard of Oz. I'm not sure if it syncs up as well, moment for beat, etc. But maybe if you start it on the third clock alarm or something, lol?
