I was at the Copa in NYC on April 4, 1968, to see The Supremes. When they came out for their first set, Diana Ross announced that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had been shot. When they came back out for their second set, she announced that he had died as a result of his wound. She then dedicated this song to him. I don't think there was a dry eye in the place.

@@ikexbankai No, I will NOT stop! 10 of the 12 number ones as well as "reflections" (#2) were recorded by Diane, Mary, and Flo, THE SUPREMES. Only 2 number 1's were recorded by Diana Ross and The Supremes, Diane, Mary, and Cindy. I am not going to sit by silently while the silly "Ross as a solo act" fans rewrite the entire history and legacy of THE SUPREMES with Ross Revisionist "facts" containing invalid and inaccurate information. The Supremes, Diana Ross and The Supremes, as well as the 1970's incarnations of The Supremes were all VERY different groups with very different personnel. Yes, all the groups were THE SUPREMES; so, let's CALL them that! They were Diana Ross and The Supremes for about "15 minutes" before they became The Supremes AGAIN in 1970 as they remain today.

Well cut through the bs, they were called the Supremes until pillow talk eased in, and all of a sudden they were called Diana Ross and The Supremes, which I have always loved these ladies but look at the sadness in Florence's face, this started as her group, the Primetts, besides her personal life and management issues, that probably drove her to drink and didn't care anymore. R.ip Flo and Mary 🙏🏾 love ya Diana! 👍🏾
@deeks19707 жыл бұрын
Wow. You could cut the tension with a knife. I understand why Diana was chosen to be the lead singer. However, I didn't like the way that Florence and Mary were pushed aside and later shoved to the back.

there was something about Florence Ballard that escaped everyone insofar as its true significance. obviously, Diana had an enormous natural talent, however she was literally being spiritually impressed that much further...enormously further by the spiritual force pouring into Florence. And it is in this song beyond all the others, where it can be readily seen with eyes that can see such things.

@hammycats69197 жыл бұрын
egodust11 come on. Florence had a powerhouse voice where Diana had a mickey mouse voice. Florence should have been given this song then and only then would you see the true power of Flo. Flo was robbed in so many ways. I guess it pays to sleep with the boss like Diana did, huh? Diana just cannot hit the notes on power ballads like Flo could. Flo will always have a apecial place in my heart. xx
@egodust117 жыл бұрын
Hammy Cats69 .. I couldn't agree more. I wish there were some decent studio recordings of Flo. I heard some of her ability solo, and the inspirational power in her voice, but you can tell she was rushed in those recordings...so the mood was never properly captured. Like Paul Williams in the Temps, replaced by Ruffin (and rightly so, overall), Flo was replaced by Dianna, for no good reason at all (notwithstanding Gordy).

@@kurtsupreme ...nope. Wrong. What we are looking at is from the Hollywood Palace, but no one claimed that this video took place on the date of his death. 2004mojo is correct that it was on the album "The Supremes Live at the Copa". I was at the Copa on April 4, 1968; the day of Dr. King's assassination. The Supremes came out for the first set and Diana Ross announced that he had been shot before they started the set. When they came out for the second set, later in the evening, she started by announcing that he had succumbed to his wounds. She dedicated this song to him. I remember it like it was yesterday. There was not a dry eye in the house. I still get chills when I think about it. I could tell you what I was wearing that night, right down to the shoes I had on. Since the Copa is in NYC and Johnny Carson was in Hollywood, there is no way that they were on his show that night. Trust me on this one. I was sitting about 30 feet away from the microphone that Diana was singing in to. Anyone who knows me, knows what my memory is like and wouldn't even dream of arguing.
