If I had to pick a stretch of freeway for driving over 100 mph, I wouldn't pick Interstate 696. It just doesn't have that wide open look and feel of a rural area. 70 mph seems too fast for that sunken section, where the visibility isn't as good, and there are curves in the freeway. If I had to pick a stretch of freeway for driving over 100 mph (and didn't care about speeding tickets), I'd pick Interstate 80 in Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats. It's over 30 miles in a straight line with horizon-to-horizon visibility and no exit/entrance ramps.

From what I hear, the main reason this freeway is a hotbed for speeding is because of the historic lack of enforcement. The freeway was actually designed to have a speed limit of 55 miles per hour, but the speed limit was raised to 70 due to 85th percentile speed measurements.
@trevor1790Ай бұрын
@@InterstateKS Guess my local-ish knowledge might be useful. I avoid 696 like the plague. Every time I get on 696 the traffic is awful. Speeding enforcement is generally pretty spotty around here. I've literally seen billboards calling the Southfield Freeway the "Southfield Speedway." So, yeah. Crazy drivers? Sure, but that's kinda par for the course around here.
@InterstateKSАй бұрын
I have been a student at Lawrence Tech for the last 2.5 years, so I know that traffic is crazy everywhere in the Metro region (although I don't think it's much different from traffic in a lot of metro areas). I'm not necessarily one to avoid certain routes because of driver behavior, so I use I-696 from time to time. I just mentioned I-696 because of the "Autobahn" coinage.

Wait, was this filmed recently? For the past few years there's been construction that made it super slow but I haven't been down there in a while. I can't speak to what it was like before 2023 or so from my own experience but it is somewhat notorious around here.

I'm surprised to see not too much development has happened along the Eastex corridor. I used to live in Humble just off 1960 going towards Lake Houston and it would take me only 40 minutes to get to work downtown. I ended up moving to the Galleria area and it would take almost twice as long to get downtown, despite being much closer. I'm sure things have changed, I moved from Texas over 10 years ago.

Like in science, always room for improvement. They always find ways to make an experiment better and better.

Drivers treat the 75 mph speed limit on the toll lanes as the MINIMUM speed limit. I remember driving 80 mph for several miles on the toll lanes AND I STAYED IN THE RIGHT LANE.

I am an Indian American. I loved US 64 like you won't believe. Even watching this video got my eyes misted. Used to visit sister in Chattanooga from Memphis. This was in 1999 till 2003. My favorite place was going down hill somewhere near Winchester. I used to put my Toyota SR5 Corolla in neutral just to see how fast it will go without me giving any power. If my memory serves me right, it was 86 mph going down hill. Those days with no traffic, I felt safe doing that. thanks for the video. I have a question. I am not able to find any video of that part of US64. I see I24 MT Eagle part. But not the US64 E big slope before merging into US 24 .. Looks like my memory is not good about this location. Am I mistaking the US24 slope for US 64 ?
@InterstateKS6 ай бұрын
That might be signed as US-41A today, if you are thinking of the road through Cowan and Sewanee, or US-41 if you are thinking of the road that goes through Pelham.

@@InterstateKS AHA, thank you for that. I thought I lost my brain cells. Well, actually I did.. 🙂 But not on this one. I choke up thinking about my life in Tennessee. God, I miss it. Always stopped at Dodge's chicken in Savanna and got 50 hot wings and stopped at the Tennessee river near Savannah bridge and ate. Talked about how that's the only river in USA that flows north.. Another time, Saw some just born sign on a home on the highway, always wondered how that kid turned out to be. Must be 25 years ago. I used to look at all those houses and used to wonder how their lives were. Anyways, since I was a new to USA at that time, I marveled at everything in Tennessee. Even though now I live in California, I think of Memphis TN, as my home town. That's the only house number I remember in these 30 yrs in USA. Other house numbers, I don't remember. I miss 64 sometimes. Even though going on Interstate from Memphis to Chattanooga was faster, my heart tugged me to go on US 64 at the last minute, much to the annoyance of those in my car at that time.. Many many trips on that highway.. Thanks again Sir Srinivas.
